Phal Problem

I got a Phal Sogo Grape on 5/21/08, when I look at the arrival picture I now see a small black area near the crown.

I repotted it into coir mix (I have all my other phals in that and they are doing well).

I did notice the black area later but wasn't thinking!

On 6/5/08 all the leaves came right off! I looked at the roots and I think I still have some good ones. I cleaned it up and put the leaf less plant in a small pot with bark.

Anything else I can do? If my roots are still OK, will it possibly grow new ones?
I am pretty disappointed that this happened, I really wanted the Sogo Grape.

Here is the picture of arrival date and today.

Unfortunately this does not look good. If the plant does not have leaves then it will lack the chlorophyl to use the light to process nutrients and grow. (except for true leafless orchids like Polyrhiza lindenii which use chlorophyl in the roots)

Even if it does do something it will most likely have to start over like it was a brand new seedling and would be years away from blooming.

Oh Dear I am sorry this has happened to you April

my opinion only The crown looks to have rot... I would not bother with that as when I zoomed in on your second pic there looks to me as if there is also Rot starting in the remaining roots as well.
( thats my opinion only.)
I wish I could offer you better news.

lets wait and see what the other advise the Geeks can give you regarding this as well

Oh, I was afraid that it would not be good news. I am sooo disappointed!!

I just can't figure out why it did that it was on the same program as my other Phals and they are fine. Maybe it had some starting when I got it and it was downhill from there.

sad little, crying face...

myorchid, what is really scary is that your plant went from looking pretty healthy to...well... you know... in just a matter of a few weeks

Yes, contact the seller and ask for a replacement/refund. You only had the plant 2 weeks when all the leaves fell off indicating there was definitely something wrong with the Phal when it arrived. If the seller is a good one, interested in satisfied customers, they'll replace the plant or refund your money. The vast majority of good orchid vendors are honest and fair and provide good customer service so I would be surprised if you had any trouble. If they give you trouble let us know here on the forum so others can avoid them.

April
please let us know how you get on with the seller.
I would like to know what the seller has to say about that.
as you bought that on the 21.5.08 I would say the orchid was sick before you received it.

Oh, April! I'm sorry! That's a plant on my wish list. I would be sad too. I'll be curious to know how you make out also.

April, try repotting the roots and central core into bark or similar and do not water. keep in a humid spot an you may get a keikei come away from the base.If there are any signs of further rot sprinkle the area with cinnamon wich is the worlds best fungicide. Wally

April, if you get the slightest indication from the seller that they may not want to be all that cooperative, just to avoid this from becoming anything unpleasant, why don't you send this thread to them? And of course, at the least, photos.

Who's the vendor?

Let us know how it goes.

Thanks for all the help. I have repotted the roots and core into a bark mix and will hope that I can get a keiki.

Thanks again.
