These buds seem small to me...

I have a Phal Hilo Lip X Phal Hilo Lip 'Mendenhall' which started a spike about a month or so ago...and now that it has buds on it, they are just tiny. Smaller than my Mini Mark buds were. And these have the elongated stem away from the spike already, which I usually notice when the buds start getting ready to open. See what you think I know they will get a big bigger when ready to open, but still...these are extremely small compared to what I'm used to.

I think the small buds are cute. Not sure as to what size they are suppose to be. I still think it looks very healthy!

I'm about 99% sure your orchid has been mistagged. To my knowledge Hilo Lip does not have mottled leaves. Your inflorescence suggests strong influence from a species like equestris, which as I recall is not in the parentage of Hilo Lip, at least not in the amount that would result in an equestris-like spike habit.

I am going to be seriously PO'ed if it is not a Hilo Lip. I ordered a Hilo Lip from Carter & Holmes, and then got one free, which was also labeled as a Hilo Lip, and BOTH have mottled leaves.

What do you mean by equestris-like spike habit? What is the equestris habit?

wanted to say, I had wondered about the buds being so light colored, and thought they would be darker to begin with...

I did some research, and both sides of the hybrid have schilleriana, so that would explain the mottled leaves, right? Does anyone else have a Hilo Lip on here?

I'm sorry... I've never grown that one. I love Carter & Holmes, I'm expecting an order from them any day. I don't think they would screw up. They're a great outfit. Keep us posted...

I'm waiting too. Maybe then the mystery of the tiny buds will be solved.

The size of the buds looks only slightly bigger than the ones on my equestris plants (small species plants). I think she's just going to be dainty... I don't think it's a culture issue. Show us the flowers when they open!

I don't know if this post is of any value to you...but last year I thought the same thing with one of my Phal noids...the buds were extremely small...but they bloomed (with out any deformities). They were just small flowers.

The only thing that might be sad is that you had your hopes up for a certain flower and now you have something else. At least, you have a healthy plant and it is budding for you.

Well without using too many botanical terms a spike "habit" is he characteristics of a particular species' or hybrids' inflorescence: how many buds, how they're arranged on the inflorescence, whether they're sequential or all flower at once, etc., etc., etc. In my opinion your spike looks quite a bit like an equestris spike in the way that there are many buds and the way that the ones near the base of the inflorescence are quite a bit more developed than the ones at the apex (growing tip).

Cheers to you for doing your homework, and yes, you're correct, the schilleriana would explain the mottled leaves.

Here are some good pics of Phal Hilo Lip:

Phal Hilo Lip was all the rage about 15 years ago and you can see why form the pic, because it is the "opposite" of most phals with it's coloured sepals and petals and bright white lip. It's popularity was waneing by the time I started judging though we still saw one or two in nearly every show we judged.

I'd call these "mid-size" phals (that's not a real term just one I use for descriptive purposes). The flowers are not small like an equestris but they're not huge like the big white and pink hybrids we see. Which is one of several reasons I suspect your plant is misstagged because a Hilo Lip would have larger buds. But I'm getting ahead of myself here because the buds are merely small now. That's not to say they won't get much larger in the furute as they grow.

I personally have always liked Phal Hilo Lip and was sorry to see them go out of vogue. I am sincerely hoping that we'll see another post in this thread in which you show your fully opened Hilo Lip flowers; thus showing me I was wrong, wrong, wrong about the tag. I'd like to see this hybrid make a comeback.

I am crossing my fingers that it ends up being the Hilo Lip that I placed an order for. If not, I'll be contacting Carter & Holmes, but I'll still love this plant. This one has great roots, great leaves, and just looks nice all the time.

I did some searching and found a website that provides parentage information for registered orchid hybrids. It was neat, I wrote down kind of a little family tree for the Hilo Lip. Hybrid upon hybrid, all the way back to the schilleriana.

Thanks for the info Kevin, I really appreciate the input.

The natural spread on 14 AOS awarded Hilo Lips averages 8.9 cm (3.50 inches) so it is not a small deal.

I purchased one from Norman's over one year ago--mottled leaves.

Stitz, your Hilo Lip has mottled leaves? And it bloomed true to flower form? Maybe I'm going senile. I've seen lots of Hilo Lip at shows and I don't ever recall seeing one wiht mottled leaves. Though to be fair I haven't seen one since I moved to Australia meaning I havent' seen on in almost 4 years.

JLu, 8.9cm is good but still medium-ish sized in my opinion, especially compared with the large white or pink hybrids that are around 12-15cm.

psych, I'll be the first to celebrate my wrongness and happy to have re-learned about the Hilo Lip if that's the case. Certainly at this point it looks like theres a good chance I am wrong. I'm especially eager to see it flower now!
