Phal Brother Little Yellowboy

Hey Guys,

I just wanted to post my Phal with it's keiki. I think this spike has just about finished blooming, then it produced this keiki! I tried to get a better picture of the keiki, but this was the best pic by far.

The tag on this says Phal Brother Little Yellowboy but I don't know if thats actually what it is.

Last edited by kmarch; 11-20-2007 at 09:38 PM. Reason: keiki is not capitalized; it is not a proper noun. Hybrid names like Little Yellowboy are capitalized.

I have 2 of these. The full name is Phal. Brother Little Yellowboy. They are really cute, I wish mine would keiki.

I don't think this would happen in nature. I think the spiking from the crown is a mutation resulting from multi-generation complex hybridizing. From what I have read, I do not think Phals in the wild bloom off secondary spikes like hybrids do in cultivation.

BTW, Phalaenopsis is always capitalized as it is a generic name (genus).

bellina9,

I made some corrections to your post: 1) the name of yoru plant is Phal Brother Little Yellowboy, 2) the word "keiki" is not capitalized because it is not a proper noun, 3) hybrid names are capitalized (as in Brother Little Yellowboy) but do not appear in quotation marks.

You've got a very cute flower there.

If you bought it at Lowes within the last 5 months or so, it is a safe bet. The only yellow ones they had there were Brother Little Yellowboy. Everything else was labeled Wedding Promenade and amabilis (some amabilis were fushia colored lol), I have a white Wedding Promenade, and I really feel those were not the real names. I however did some research at the time, and feel the Brother Little Yellowboy's were accurate.

Unfortunately your noid is still a noid. Picture matching isn't a reliable way of identifying noid hybrids. One hybrid can display a great deal of variety. And different hybrids can look exactly alike. For this reason picture matching isn't reliable for making positive IDs of neither hybrids nor of species.

On the other hand, it would be interesting if you both bought them from Lowe's at about the same time and if they were clones and not crosses, then the amount of variation would be greatly reduced.... Hmmmmm.... Can you both post pics of your flowers?

I bought mine from the grower at a little show in San Diego along with a few other noids. I will post a picture after tomorrow (Thanksgiving), my favorite holiday.

Mine is not in bloom and I don't have a pic, but it looked almost exactly like bellina's. I bought mine labeled Brother Little Yellowboy. Originally had 3 and one spontaneously died, looked fine, treated the same as the others, and I touched a leaf one day and the whole plant fell apart. The other 2 are potted together, and look alike, but I only saw one in bloom. The one that died had normal size lighter, roundish, green leaves, the two that remain have very small pointy dark green leaves that are fairly thin. The blooms were almost identical on the deceased, and the double plant, weird, hybrids are I guess.

We have deviated from the original thread somewhat - maybe Fred can divide and call this one an appropriate name - "Phal Brother Little Yellowboy?" or something. At any rate - I have one too - I think they are more than likely a mericlone produced in great numbers by Matsui and then distributed nationwide in chain stores - I got mine at Safeway.

I hear you Mike and I have just created a thread for that topic.

when a member post's in the ( Orchid Care Cultivation Section ) can you please try to stay on topic.

being deviated from the topic makes it hard for the member who has started the original thread.

I encourage you all to share your orchid pictures and questions but if it not on the same topic please feel free to start a new thread with your own topic.

thank you kindly
Fred
