In order for you guys to get a better idea on what I mean here are some pics. I am using just Alifor nothing else. I am using two kinds of pots/dishes. One type uses an open dish where you can see the water. The other uses a attached, closed dish (far right Phal)where you cannot see the water but would probably keep the water around longer (slower evaporation). Which one do you think is better? I like the fact I can see the amount of water ...giving me a idea of how much water would be needed.

The level of water in the pot is dictated by the height of the dish. There is no need to poke holes into the side of the pot since it would freely run out of the bottom of the pot anyways. This is still considered S/H.

I think I might take them out...reason being is because semi-hydro seems to be for plants under a controlled environment. Today there is an overcast and some heavy rain clouds here and there. If it were to rain wouldn't the plants be drenched?

I don't think rain would matter because the holes in the pot would not allow the water to raise too high. I am new to semi-hydro, but according to Jay's directions I water from the top to wet the top pebbles anyway.
