SEMI semi hydro?

I bought some plastic pots with the bottom dish. I made holes along the side of the pot and used the dish to retain the water. I am sure the water will evaporate a little faster but do you think there will be any problems with this? Problems for the Phal.?

In order for you guys to get a better idea on what I mean here are some pics. I am using just Alifor nothing else.

I am using two kinds of pots/dishes. One type uses an open dish where you can see the water. The other uses a attached, closed dish (far right Phal)where you cannot see the water but would probably keep the water around longer (slower evaporation). Which one do you think is better? I like the fact I can see the amount of water ...giving me a idea of how much water would be needed.

The level of water in the pot is dictated by the height of the dish. There is no need to poke holes into the side of the pot since it would freely run out of the bottom of the pot anyways. This is still considered S/H.

I'm not a S/H expert but I don't know if the holes are there for oxygen as they are very small. With S/H, good air flow around the plant is highly recommended.

You are right..the holes in a real semi hyrdro plant are there to determine the level of water.

By the way, these are outside.

I think I might take them out...reason being is because semi-hydro seems to be for plants under a controlled environment. Today there is an overcast and some heavy rain clouds here and there. If it were to rain wouldn't the plants be drenched?

I was under the impression that S/H was better for people who didn't have controlled environments (in respects to humidity and watering).

I don't think rain would matter because the holes in the pot would not allow the water to raise too high. I am new to semi-hydro, but according to Jay's directions I water from the top to wet the top pebbles anyway.

Bkim, you make a lot of sense... controlled environment is well..controlled.

I'll give it a try for like a week or so.

Thank you guys.
