Mystery Orchid

Hi! I have not posted for a while, but I been reading posts when I can. My mom fell and broke her arm so I have been caring for her since the surgery. As usual I an back with a question. My daughter gave me this beautiful orchid for Mother's Day, but alas, no tag. Can anyone ID it? Lashelle

It looks quite a bit like a Burr. Nelly Isler but there's no way to positively ID a tagless hybrid.

I know there is little or no chance of a positive ID. I am hoping for at least a "kinda sorta" ID so I will have some clue how to care for it. It is really pretty, the flowers have an interesting pattern on them that the pictures really did not do justice to. Lashelle

How to care for it is easy. Regardless of what the name is, the care for all Oncidium alliance plants is about the same.

Light levels around 2500 foot candles to flower (inside is fine once the buds set but more light when out of bloom, Outdoor summer sun is 11,000 foot candles most homes 1000), good air circulation and general good care. Oncidium are pretty forgiving on watering. The large bulb can sustain the plant through drought and if there is good drainage the roots are not as quick to rot as other orchids.

The flowers do look a lot like the Nelly Iser so I do think that is close. I looked up Nelly Iser on the net and they are described as fragrant yet this plant really has no fragrance I can detect, so maybe it is a hybrid in the same family that did not get the good smell. Thanks Jerry! I thought based on appearance that was the care for this plant, but I was not sure. Despite having orchids of some kind or another for 20+ years I am still such a newbie with a new plant. Lashelle

It looks rather like what I think my Burr Stefan Isler 'Dos Pinhos' will when the buds open. Saw an open one today and it really does resemble your photo more than a Nelly.

I've always loved this orchid. It's the only one I remember that's predominantly red and not tiny. There's another member here who grows these, I can't think of her name. Anyone want to help? That cute, young girl in San Diego who had a problem with one of her doggies becoming too aggressive last year.....?

I'll try to find the thread later...maybe there's some info. in there that will help you out with i.d.'ing.

Wow it has to be one of these or a very close relative! This is much closer than I thought I would get. This list is tops! Lashelle
