Plant ID

What does my plant's name mean? The tag reads "Rfda. Jerry 'Pacific Evening Star'" and I tried looking it up online and came up with nothing. Help?

Wow, that is a tough one - all I could find is that it is "Ada x Odontoglossum x Oncidium" and no pictures. I believe the Ada is Adacidium and I found a picture of that in Spanish Wikipedia (I love Wikipedia). Not sure tho, because I've also seen Adacidium as Adcm or Adcm Ada. The Odontoglossum & Oncidium are easy to find pictures of.

Ops, have to edit myself here. Came across this page Orchid Genera and Abbreviations and all it says about 'Ada' is Natural Genus - so I have no idea what the ada means!

Better leave it to the experts.

Hope that helps.

Taradale is right, the plant is Rehfieldara, which is a cross between Ada keiliana (Ada is a genus of orchids, just like Oncidium, Phalaenopsis, etc.) and Odontocidium Sorel Point, which is a cross between an Oncidium and an Odontoglossum. Rehfieldara is not a naturally occurring genus, but a man-made one that has only been named in the past few years.

For those wanting to look up the family names of orchids and the crossing that make up the inter-genetic hybrids a good reference is

http://www.orchids.mu/Glossary/Glossary_R.htm

I had some difficulty with the direct link and had to go to the home page and then select glossary to get to the list.

When using the list you can click on any name the is in blue and it will take you to a description and care instruction page that is very useful

The list was 45 pages long when I printed it about 2 years ago and Rdfa was not listed, but it is listed now. That makes me believe it is a very new hybrid.
