My NOID from the 'near dead' rack

I just recently picked up an orchid from the clearance 'almost dead' rack at a greenhouse near my house. I think it is a miltonia, but im not sure. it has an old bloom on it still, but it is pretty wilted and shriveled. One of the leaves also has a very brown crunchy leaf tip. Anybody's opinion on the condition of the plant and what it is and ESPECIALLY care instructions, i would be so grateful. If it is a miltonia, since it was aNOID, how can i tell if it is a warm or cool growing miltonia? Can a miltonia be grown under fluorescent lights?

thanks,
sarah

You're right that the flower and tip of the leaf look sad, but (at least from the photos) it looks the leaves are rather healthy. I don't know if that's a camera trick, but they don't look dehydrated and do look firm and green. AOS has a general culture sheet for miltonia and miltoniopsis. Regular watering is important to keep them hydrated.

It looks as though it has a new bloom about ready to open too. You should be able to enjoy this bloom for awhile longer.

I think the grower should be insulted calling this a 'near dead' rack plant.

The plant is young and healthy. There are just a limited number of flowers and they are about finished, I understand the discount but it is not near death,

I agree with Jerry, I think this plant looks pretty good. Yes the blackened leaf tips aren't ideal but with good culture the new ones will be green and healthy to the tip. Get yourself a good AOS culture sheet for Miltonias at AOS | Home and give it a read and let us know if you have questions.

I also think the flower, a fresh one, will be really, really beautiful!

Its great to hear. I also thought it was unfortunate to be called nearly dead, which is why i scooped it up so quickly. Any advice on how to tell if it is cool growing or warm growing?

Also---has anyone been experiencing some difficulties getting onto this forum recently?

Shame, shame on the place that had this one down for the count! Just because it has only one flower left to bloom doesn't make it dead. It looks quite healthy - nice pick up!

I'm rather in favor of them calling it the "near dead rack"... more healthy orchids for brave souls to buy on the cheap!
