Sedirea japanica Issues, damaged leaves and found slug

Ok, after I bought it and brought it home I noticed a sunken black spot on the older leaf, with each day this leaf started shriveling and yellowing. The new leaf opposite that leaf was having browning on the edge. This browning was shriveling and mushy. This was also happening on the old leaf below it only worse. So I sliced of those browning parts and removed the shriveling leaf with the black spot. The next day the browning was returning to the areas I had removed and to the other new leaf that was above the one I completely removed. Is this typical with slug/snail problems or could this be something else in addition to the slug/snail damage? The day the browning returned it needed watering so I gave it a good soaking for about 20 min or so then flushed it. I left it in the bathroom sink to drain and when I went back 30 min later a tiny slug/snail thing was was on the end of a root sticking out of the bottom of the pot. After this I went back to the leaves and removed the new browning areas and sealed with powder rooting hormone and dabbed the new root growths with hormone as well. Yesterday I cleaned up the remaining dry rooting hormone on the edges of the leaves and new root growths.No more browning, leaves healed well, new root growths larger. I am also adding super thrive to r/o water for all of my orchids now. My question is where do I go from here aside from monitoring? Thinking of repotting after blooms fade. This issue seems to be taken care providing there are no eggs in medium. Should I repot now while in bloom to make sure there are no eggs or wait till blooms fade? It was only one very small slug/snail, but could I be underestimating it?

Hi Kid a and welcome. I'm really no expert, but if this was my plant I would get it out of that medium as soon as possible. Even though it appears that you've taken care of the problem the solution might only be temporary. It will probably ease your mind by repotting it. You don't always lose your flowers if you repot gently. You're flowers are lovely. Good luck with your plant.

Thanks, I just may. I emailed the greenhouse I bought it from and Leon said I could bring it in and he would tell me how to repot it.

I second the nod to repot. You found one little snail/slug, there could be another. Better safe than sorry.

Use Brookn's Recipe. Increase the amount of soap and extract in the mix to make it a tad bit stronger. I found that this kills the slugs, bugs, bees, flies, worms, cockroaches, fleas,,,,,,,,,,,(I've been following Brook and doing some mad science myself ) THIS WILL NOT HURT THE PLANT !!!! It was what I used when I soaked my babies and found and killed all the icky critters.

I actually printed the recipe out when I read the post about your success with it. I just need some cinnamon extract, I'll pick it up on the way home from work today! I am compiling this huge file about different remedies and and such things and last night made log sheets for things like this so I can look back at issues and see progress and stuff. I also made one to track humidity and temp fluctuations and stuff. Mad science is always fun!!! I love projects, and so far this plant is turning into a small one. It would be ok to soak after I just soaked yesterday? I might as well soak all of mine while I'm at it, i didn't quarantine the new ones I got at the show. I am learning better to quarantine and wash that not right! Thanks:-)

I applaud Leon on his excellent customer service in showing you how to repot! Since you found slugs, I think your leaf damage and loss was probably caused by the slugs. I too recommend taking Leon up on his offer to teach you how to repot and then do it. When you do, carefully examine the roots for slugs and little slug eggs which are tiny and white or cream-coloured.

I don't think applying rooting hormone ot the cuts will accomplish anything. I use powdered cinnamon.

I'll kidnap the cinnamon from the cubbard and take a long lunch break to go repot it.
