Well, LKY here.....

This was a seedling Phal. I bought last year (August '07) along with 8 other (different) seedlings. I was hoping to get a spike this coming Autumn but this little monkey couldn't wait.

Wow Sandra, what a nice surprise!! I can't wait to see the blooms. I know they use Phal.
amboinensis for it's yellow breeding. It's got to be a looker.

Sandra - your surprise infected one of my Phals! I found a spike on my Phal Gene Wentz this morning. FUN!!

Sure will Jay! It'll be a long while for me. As I remember, last year's inflorescence was 2 feet tall. LONG way to go!

Yay, spikes!!! Can't wait to see the blooms! My Encyclia that Hummer gave me is in spike and the little hybrid project Phal is in spike. Let the daunting task of waiting begin!!! ........aaand go!

Vivienne, Jenny, great news to read! How we love those spikes.

I had it all worked out to make it feel as if yearly spiking really wasn't a long stretch....from seeing the spike to it blooming - approx. 2&1/2 months. Then in bloom for at least another 3-4 months at the least.....so that's 6 months now....then, cut the spike at the nodes to see if another spike or keiki happens....wait a month or so.....now we're at about 8 or 9 months....and then, cut the spike down, probably do a repot and let it rest and get ready for the next spiking season. All those stages are great and there you go....the year flew....

but now knowing that there are summer bloomers, I can stop talking myself into how this isn't a once a year event that takes forever, after all that convincing myself....love it!

Yep yeppers! If you go to the hybrid thread and under the "Naples Nights" under my name you can see the pic of the little booger peeking out

Not a spike afterall but a new leaf which I'm pretty sure is the beginning of a basal keiki. Who's complaining though?
