Question i rescued a paph...now what?

Hi,

I just recently got a paph. that was done blooming from a garden center near my home. The greenery is the mottled type and it is in fine condition, the spike is still there, but the flower is gone. Can i expect this to bloom again this year? How should I carefor it

Sarah,

Get a good culture sheet like those found at AOS | Home or on this forum (see the Orchid Care Section).

I would recommend repotting now, as after flowering is generally the best time to repot a Paph. Use a mix of medium bark with perelite, charcoal, and a bit of chopped sphag (also possibily some peat and sand if you have it on hand). Paphs like fresh mix and need to be repotted every year. They like to be kept slightly moist.

Your Paph will not bloom again this year unless it has another growth nearing maturity. Paphs bloom only once off each growth.

Take a look at the culture sheets and let us know if you have questions.

I also bought a Paph from Loew's. It had mottled leaves and birds had done a number on the leaves of the first growth. I repotted it and have kept it evenly moist. The secong growth is well on its way and looks very healthy. Most likely you purchased a Paph Maudiae hybrid, which is one of the easiest Paphs to grow. You should do fine with it. Good luck.
