Taking a big Masdevallia jump!

Well I took my biweekly trip to my favorite orchid shop today and saw five huge Masdevallias in 6 inch pots. I had issues with these guys in the past but this year took some advice and started growing them outdoors in the shade
and they seem to have done much better...so far... So I picked up one of these bad boys. It's from Orchid Zone, so it only has a number but was told I can get the plant name next time I come in.

It is not my most expensive orchid but it's close...so I hope I can keep this one alive!

Nice plant you should check to see that the mix is fresh. I have quite a few masa and i repot the larger ones in 70% sphag and 30 % bark the smaller ones I keep in just moss but I repot everyone when I get tham home. Keep them moist I water about every other day but i grow mine in doors

Thanks jbigio, The plant is in a mix of lava rock and other stuff that I can't ID. It looks as if this plant has been in this mix for years. I did talk a bit to the seller about the medium and he feels that the medium is somewhere between moss and back and thought that I should keep it potted until there are signs of problems.

Brooke, I'll take your hint into consideration ;-) I'm going to see how successful I am
at keeping this guy going first. Orchid Zone is a bit of a mystery. From what I understand they (he) only sells to select retailers. I buy many of my orchids, including this one, from a place called Orchid Fever in Culver City, CA. They seem to get a number of plants from The Orchid Zone. If you are interested in buying one of the Masd. you should call them. I know they have at least 2 Masd. Celine Dions that are rather large.

That is a very large plant, looks like it's been well grown.

I would check the potting mix, it may have been in there a long time but aside from that it looks terrific.
