Cycd Wine Delight "JEM"

Okay here we go again, lol
I had a Catasetum orchid before but not anymore, It lost its leaves late last year, I stopped watering, but as soon as I saw it start new growth from an eye at the base I started to water. Boy was that it, it rotted with lightning speed. Now that I have done a bit of research, I read that water commences when the new growth is well on it's way. So I could resist purchasing a Wine Delight. Take a look at the pic below, it was taken today and has actually grown a bit since yesterday-when it was potted and WATERED. My question is, did I water too early?

From what I understand the watering should start when the new roots are a few inches long. This is at least what I have to do with my Fredclarkeara, which is 1/3 Catasetum.

I spray mist the leaves and bark so as to keep the bark moist, but not wet.

I do this with all the orchids in the GH and it seems to work for me.

Only when I feed, do I actually wet the mix, but I try to do it first thing in the morning on the weekend so as the excess water evaporates off fairly quickly once the sun starts getting up a bit.

elitebettas,

Yes, you did water too early. Watering should start when the new growth has roots, at least, 2 inches long and it's in the medium. If you rather wait a while longer with watering, you can mist the roots for a while.

What I do is withold all water from my catasetinae after the plants have gone mostly dormant (or after New Year's, if they are still not going dormant). Once the leaves have all dropped, I remove all the medium from the pots and let them sit there bare root with NO water whatsoever until the new growths have roots at least 3 inches long. Then I pot them up again and start watering. This method seems to work, at least under my conditions. I noticed today that new growths are just starting on at least some of them.

Hmm, looks like I got ahead of myself with the watering can again, well I only watered it once after I potted it up and so far no signs of rot, the bulb is swelling and leaves are elongating so we'll see, thanks guys

I think probably. When I grew these (Mormodes and Catasetum) I waited until roots began to emerge form the new growths, then I started watering very lightly at first then more as the roots grew.

Hmm, well when i did pot it, the roots on the new growth were one or one and a half inches. The new growth is shooting out new roots so I think I'm safe
