Unexpected Surprise

The grow habits of Coelogyne still confuse me But this one was a most welcome.

I thought these were just new bulbs forming but they got taller and taller

What makes me love this (C. ochracea) even more is it doesnt have sprawling rhizome between bulbs, at least, not yet!

I dont have much luck with scented plants, but this one is meant to fill the room so I'm hopeful

I explained, in another thread somewhere, each of the 4 different blooming habits found in Coelogyne. See if you can find it. If not, I'll go through my previous posts to try to find it.

You are going to LOVE this flower. In my humble opinionit is one of the prettiest of all the Coelogyne.

oh Tom - you really have me interested!! My Coelogyne dayana now has 5 new growths but they aren't nearly as developed as the ones on your plant. Please keep this thread updated with pics. I'm eager to see what happens!!!

Good growing!

I had the that post in the back of my mind Kmarch, this is its first time blooming so im not sure if these are flowers from the finished growth, or flowers, which then go onto be a new growth (if what I have said makes any sense atall! )

I cant wait to see how this turns out! Will hopefully have something for the May photo competition

It does make sense and Coel. ochracea is proteranthous. It flowers from the top of an unformed new growth which, after flowering, grows on to become a mature growth with leaves and pseudobulb.

You may also wish to know that the name Coel ochracea is in dispute. many taxonomists, including Coelogyne expert Dudley Clayton claim Coel ochracea and Coel nitida are the same and if they are, the name Coel nitida came first so ochracea is obsolete. However, there doesn't seem to be consensus on the mater though Coel experts lean towards synonomy. I have not read botanical descriptions of ochracea to compare them with the descriptions of nitida.

Just something to be mindful of.

Oh, and one more thing, tell your ochracea to hurry up and flower! I want to see it!
