Oak Hill Rocks

Before a little show & tell, I just want to update members participating in the species project with the latest. I'm waiting to get help in setting up the sub forums for the project and it's been somewhat delayed because Fred is out of town, currently. As soon as he's available, he's going to finalize the last step to make our first steps in the project, possible. Hope everyone is taking pics of their plants.

I just today, received my plant for the project from Oak Hill, the Aspasia lunata and of course, I ordered another plant, one that I've been wanting and have always admired, an Encyclia Green Hornet. I wonder if anyone just ordered their project plants....no way! Way? I am a real orchidholic because the plant isn't bloomed yet and I think it's magnificent. I've said it before here that prior to becoming interested in orchids and growing them, I was always perplexed and didn't understand the interest others had because I thought they were ugly when not in bloom. OK, I said it, yes, I really thought they were and now I can't figure out how I couldn't see their beauty in their totalities.

Here's my magnificent new Encyclia Green Hornet. This will be the first time I don't repot a new orchid. Oak Hill is top notch quality every which way!

I was just like you Sandra, didn't like most orchids when out of bloom. Now I get excited just looking at the new little root tips and growths. I think your Green Hornet is beautiful too! Nice looking plant.

I agree about Oak Hill! The quality of the plants, the medium, etc. were great! They even packed it in pink "ghost-poop" that I could use in the bottom of some of my pots! Beautiful Encyclia, by the way!

Lovely plant Sandra!! I've had a Green Hornet for about a year now and I love it. It
was in bloom for me from April-Sept last year. It grows fast and I currently have about
6-7 buds on last years new growth. My wife calls it her little squid plant because of the
shape of the blooms. Enjoy!!

Tobi....squid....how true, green and purple squid!

How do you do watering with yours? Treat it the same as Catts? My other Encyclia is a big drinker, needs more than the Catts. so I'm gathering all cultural info., now...after the fact...typical, me!

Nice plant Sharon, but it has never been an Encyclia.

It is usually referred to as an Epi, but with the recent renaming it appears it is
Prc. Green Hornet for the parents Psh cochleata x E. trulla

I treat mine like an Oncidium Intergeneric.

I base sunlight on the thickness of the leaves and how heat will build up in the leaf. On this basis I give Oncidium light.

I believe in heavy watering so that the roots can move the water to the pseudobulbs. In that event very few orchids get less.

To give everyone a goal at which to aim, the AOS awarded plant had 27 flowers & 24 buds on only three inflorescences (flower stems).

You mean Sandra, right Jerry? Sharon's a pretty name though, I'll take it.

This is not an Encyclia? The thicker the leaves, the more sunlight? What cultural requirements do you recommend, specifically....never let it dry, water when almost dry?

Sandra, (or is it Sharon? LOL)
I also water mine like my Oncidiums. Almost dry, but not quite as much as Catts. I
fertilize every other week when growing and/or in bloom.

Due to its parentage, they have moved it to the genus Prosthechea.

I thought I saw a spike! When you click on the picture you posted, it doesn't enlarge. You sure are tempting me to get one of my own. She's a beauty! Gook luck with her!

Just another cheer for Oak Hill. I purchased a lot of orchids from them about two months ago. Everything was well packaged and in fresh media. They were great about communicating regarding shipping delays due to weather as well. Their wholesale list is GREAT! You only need to buy 5 of the same type to get the discount. I just couldn't pass up the bargains!
