Sizing a humidifier

First, I hope one of you will tell me whether I should have added this to a "Humidifier" thread started a few days ago by Tobi. I chose to start a new thread because that one seemed to have run out of energy and I wasn't sure that people would return to it.

I'm going to add a humidifier to a 220 sq. ft. sun room. I'm tempted to oversize so it won't run out of water when I go away. But maybe they don't work that way. Maybe the big one will just use more water in the same amount of time. Maybe if I oversize I'll have everything dripping wet.

Kmarch mentioned that he really liked a Voranado model that he used for a year and a half. I had one of their fans and I really liked it. Quiet and a real air mover. I'm inclined to go with their humidifier. One model has a 2 gallon capacity, one a 4.2 gallon capacity. Which to choose....

Hi Norm,
I'm glad other people are interested in the same topic. Based on replies from my thread,
it looks like the Voranado model is a good one to purchase. I'm going for the 4.2 gallon
model. It's just slightly more expensive and nothing is too good for my 'chids (I spoil
them worse than a kid). Another concern which I didn't post in my thread is I don't want
one that is going to ruin my furniture in the room. My wife would definitely not appreciate that. So I'm hoping we get a response from others using this unit as to that
affect.

Norm: I have a Sears Quiet Comfort 6 evaporative humidifer that pretty much duplicates the Voranado product as Kevin described. It's great, however, not sure if they still make it; I've had mine for quite a number of years. The wick in these humidifer's captures the minerals and sediment and there's never been any "white dust" spread all over. It works the same as Kevin mentioned above.

The two tanks (1 1/2 gals. each) hang on each side of the unit, and when layed flat on my kitchen counter can be filled conveniently at the sink. Depending on the dryness, usually fill each tank 24-48 hours, sometimes longer. I'm out today to search for some parts. If I can't find them, I will be ordering the Voranado or a close relative with the same features. Bemis company also makes some evaporative types as mentioned above, they even have one with air purification in addition to the evaporative humidifier, (about $99). Haven't checked it out thoroughy yet.

Don't know about the ultra-sonic types at all. I have a couple small cold mist units, and even one "health" mister, (all inexpensive, about $35) but they all seem to leave white dust particles no matter what I do to solve the problem. The addition of chemicals to prevent the dust just makes another problem - that is, slippery slime water.

It's worth doing some investigation. I'm going to continue to follow this thread. Good luck.

Keep an eye out - there are humidifiers with built-in controls that turn the machine off when the room's humidity reaches a certain point.
