Coelogyne fimbriata

This ones been growing nicely now, and from the picture you can see its trying to espace from the pot.

For the size of the plant and the length of rhizome between the bulbs, does anyone have any ideas of how best I could grow it?

Mounting would be possible

Thanks,

Tom499

So interesting plant tom! I love coelogynas!

I'd repot it in some wide but shallow pot. I've red somewhere that coes have roots that do not go deep into the substrate.

Tom that is common growth for a Coelogyne fimbriata
I grow all my Coelogyne,s in posts with sphagnum moss they love to hang over the edges of the pot when a growth get to long I guide the growth around and place the growth on top of the sphagnum moss the more compact the Coelogyne is in the pot the happier it is.

I disagree with a re pot as Coelogyne,s do not take to re potting very well.
I would not mount the plant either but thats my decision only.

Tom,

I love Coel fimbriata. It's one of my favorite orchids period! Their vigorous rambling habit make them suitable for a number of different treatments:

1) A shallow bulb pan - They're easy to direct and train around a wide shallow plastic bulb pan and they do not need frequent repotting. If you do this kind of repot, put the mix it is currently in right in the new pot, disturbing the roots and mix as little as possible. If possible you could concieveably put the whole thing pot and all in a larger pot and let it crawl out.

2) A hanging tree fern pot - Because they grow fast, it doesn't take them long to fill then overflow the pot and then surround it, making a kind of hanging ball of Coel fimbrata.

3) A mount - If you go this route, wither make it a big mount or one that you can easily add to.

I am eager to see it bloom for you as all of the fimbriata I have seen have small oval pseudobulbs, nearly round and the description is the same. Some of the members of this section of Coel are very hard to identify and some taxonomists (like Barbara Gravendeel) just say to heck with it all and lump everything together into one large highly variable species.

I love the idea of the hanging tree fern pot!, could I put the original pot in it, and fill it round with bark? It'll probably take a few years to look good but would be awesome when its in flower.

I will see what the local garden centre has!

tom - what others have said about disturbing the roots... SO true! I have Coelogyne mossiae which I divided last year. Since that time, absolutely nothing, nil, nada, zip has happened. I have the two plants in different locations and neither has done a thing but sit there looking happy and healthy; but no new growth at all.

Whatever you decide will be fabulous!

That is very interesting to hear indeed.

My Coelogyne Lyme Bay (speciosa x usitana) was repotted about last week, and now looking at it I can see new root growth. It was in the middle of making a new bulb, and I can see where the growing roots have pushed into the new media. I will be watching it more carefully over the next few weeks and report back

I heard about the tree fern pot from an orchid book somewhere, I don't now remember where, and it showed a picture of it. Being tree fern, the plant just grew all over the pot as if it were a mount and it looked like a nearly perfectly spherical ball of fimbriata. To be fair, it was an older plant, something like 15-20 years old, so the grower had time to shape is and let it fill out. I wish I knew where I saw that. It was really cool.

Anyway, I did find this pic online of a mounted fimbriata. It looks to be mounted on tree fern and sphag.

The mounted fimbriata looks good, but if you plant one in a fern pot, what do you do when the whole outside is taken up? This would probably take a while, but I just wondered.

Well at the size I would probably have taken divisions from it, it sounds like they're slow to get going again, but once you get so many growths I guess you can afford to take quite a few, and then you can grow more C. fimbriata balls

The idea I was thinking of whats something like this, only the outer layer is dead fern, as it will last longer. I'd also use a smaller basket.

This is a tree fern pot cupcake. Tom I think the basket you're considering would work too.
