Phal leaves turning yellow

I have had my phal plant for nearly a month now. The blossoms are still in good shape, but I noticed over the weekend that 2 of the leaves are beginning to turn yellow. I keep the plant on a table in the middle of my school classroom. I have one entire wall of windows that faces North, my phal lives about 15 feet from the window. Between the windows and flourescent lights, my classroom is very well lit.

Any suggestions?

Thanks, Maria

Hello Maria,
I am not an expert but if it's the leaves at the bottom (the oldest ones...) its normal ..' ish -although I think they usually only turn yellow one at a time?... an other thing to watch out for is the roots... is it in a transparent pot can you see them? are they green and plumpish looking or brown and dehydrated looking ?...they may need to be 'cleaned up' and repotted ..But I'll let the experts on this board tell you better than me ...

The conditions you describe are OK for enjoying your orchid while blooming, but office/schoolroom lighting is not bright enough for orchids. Northern exposure likewise is generally not enough light for orchids either. As nenella notes, "usually" phals only yellow one leaf at a time (the bottom one). I suspect she is also on the right track in suggesting the root condition might be involved in the problem. What is is planted in? How often do you water it? Often times they have compromised root systems when they are acquired. It would probably be worthwhile to gently nudge it out of its pot and inspect the roots (you can replace it like it was if the roots are OK or repot a few days later if not). Roots should be firm and plump - usually tan, green or greyish. If they are soft, black, dark brown, stringy, etc. you need to remove all this type material when/if you repot. This can all be done even though it is still blooming. Let us know what you find and if you have any further questions. Good luck - mike

The lighting may not be sufficient, but how often it is watered is more frequently the culprit of phalaenopsis woes. Like mayres described, the roots will give you an idea of the health of the plant. Also, check the crown for any black, moist or mushy spots. The will also be a sign of any rot. If rot in the roots is present, remove the dead ones and try watering less frequently. Good luck!
