The use of high wattage lighting

Hey yall, my girl and i just joined this forum and i have a few questions to ask regarding the use of my 400 watt mh, hps indoor set up.
my other main grow is in its first month of its vegetative growth period and will switch my bulb from the metal halide, which is on 24/7 to my high pressure sodium bulb which will go on a 12/12 light schedule in about 1 or 2 weeks.

i just placed one of her orchids which has no flowers under the 24/7 mh room.
my question are :
do people here use hid's instead of natural sunlight?

is the orchid plants vegetative state is it safe to put it under full light for 24/0?

when i switch set ups will it also induce the orchid to flower also?

Orchids like any other plant need a rest. 12-14 hrs of light is good but 24 hrs is bad.

Yotone - Welcome to the forum. What type of orchids do you have?

Unlike your other grow which appears to have a flowering cycle triggered by photoperiod, orchids tend to have full year seasons triggered by temperature drops, light changes, or sometimes just when the flowering growth matures. It is better for orchids to try duplicate or mimic their natural conditions. Forcing a super vegetative state as you are does not help.

not all orchids need a rest. But they all need a night to "rest"

However, rest does not mean seasonal "rest" My Vanda, Mokara, Dendrobium
phalaenospsi , cattleya , does not need a seasonal rest. They bloom year
round for my area. So it all depend on your $$ which will decide how much
light you can provide for the plant. To help yourself, it would be helpful
for us to know what you are growing.
