Pleione info

Does anyone own or have experience with these orchids? I see pics of some neat flowers but they omit the rest of the plant and I cant find husbandry info on it. I really like P. maculata.

Pleone

I have a mixed collection of intermediate to warm growing orchids. About twenty years ago a neighbour knowing that I grew orchids brought me a small pot of pleone bulbs, a division from a much larger pot that had been growing in her garden. These plants are subjected to very cold winters in their natural environment. Although we do not experience extremely cold winters ours can be wet and cold which one does not usually associate with orchid culture. However for what it is worth I have attached a picture of my pot of Pleones, which has been divided many times over the years and has never seen the inside of a greenhouse. They have been subjected to the most appalling conditions from time to time but seem quite prepared to take what ever is thrown at them. They do get a weak feed during the growing season from time to time. Peter T

Hi! Exasperatus 2002

I have had a Pleione languishing in my greenhouse for years not doing much, and last year it flowered like mad and earned itself a place on display indoors.

Good things can come to those who wait !!

Best wishes Willnot

A got a P. formosana bulb last year, which put out a leaf and a side bulb, so now I have two, and I'm waiting to see what they'll do this time

The Pleione Website

Worth a look.

They are nice little plants, I grew them years ago , they are easy but require a complete drying off, then a chilling, I have read of people who put them in their refrigarator to chill the bulbs .Good luck.

Living in Pennsylvania, from the sound of it, I can just keep them outside for a better part of the year and move them where they'd be protected during the colder part of winter.
