Went shopping today....

After reading post after post about Neofinetia Falcata I finally had to buy one! I just hope it likes its new home. On the way home we stopped at Lowe's to purchase some seed germination trays and found a $1.00 Dendrobium. When I got it home and stripped it out of its sphag I realized it was 2 plants... Smokin Deal!

Interesting den especially for a dollar. The canes look nobile-type. The flower looks to have a little moniliforme influence. Nice neo too.

Thanks everyone.. I too thought the den was a Nobile type but of course at Lowe's all you get is "Dendrobium Orchid" on the tag. Now the question for care. I just want to make sure I follow the right road. Outside with my Onc/Catts/Den-Phal in the spring, feed till August, then let rest with minimal watering and cool down to high 30 degree nights?

Because the canes and to a little lesser extent the flowers look like a nobile-type den, I think nobile-type care is in order. Lots of water while growing. I dont' feed my nobile-type at all. Others disagree with me on that point of care.

Maybe Jerry can tell you if it is one of the Yamamoto nobile-types which don't need to get so cold in order to bloom.

I would say it is definitely a Nobile den and based on the thin cane at the base and the way it thickens higher I would say it is a Yamamoto. Also Home Depot and Lowe's buy from suppliers that use Yamamoto as a supplier.

If it is his, I would say it is Spring Dream 'Apollon', which would just be finished blooming around now,

It is not surprising to find two orchids in the pot as Yamamoto has often recommended to me to pot three to a pot for best appearance. I did a few trays that way this year and will see how people like them next year. They get very impressive very fast when multiples are planted together.

Care is easy from 25 to 100 degrees - full sun or shade - lots of water or starve for water. Even the need to remove fertilizer is forgiving. Some we added slow release fertilizer by mistake in April flowered exceptionally well even with keikis.

To be clear though, the extremes of hot/cold and wet/dry happen seasonally. If you consistently starved this plant for water, you'd end up with an unhappy plant on your hands.

If I recall correctly, Jerry's revised culture for Yamamoto nobile-type was that general nobile-type culture applies though they don't need as dry or as cold an autumn/winter as regular nobile-types.
