Anyone have these?

Hi Guys
I just ordered one each of the following:

Cochleanthes Amazing (Cnths amazonia X Cnths flabelliformis)
Agsm. Blue Butterfly (Aganesia cycanea X Menadenium lbiosum)

Anyone have any experience with these? From what little I’ve found so far they seem to be pretty easy. Kevin are the names writen right?
Thanks
Joe

Joe,

The first name is right. I grew that plant many years ago. It seemed to suffer if I let it get too dry which I unfortunately did in my orchid inexperience. I think some other forum members grow Cochleanthes, maybe they can add their experiences.

I'm not familiar with the second one. I don't recognize the names but then againthere have been a lor of name changes lately so it could be something we all know and we just don't know we know it.

Well I did a bit of research on the Agsm. Blue Butterfly (Aganisia cycanea X Menadenium lbiosum). The genus Aganisia is spelled with 2 I's and no E's..

First of all, here's a pic: Agsm. Blue Butterfly

The species parents (and therefore this hybrid too) are members of the Zygopetalum Alliance so regarding culture, I'd start with Zygo culture and see how it responds, adjusting accordingly.

Here are pics of the species parents:
Aganisia cycanea
Menadenium lbiosum

What an interesting and pretty new direction in Zygo breeding! I can't wait to see how your plant goes!

I also had problems with a Cochleanthes marginata in my early inexperienced days. I agree with kmarch that uneven watering could have been the problem and possibly the high temperatures of SW Florida.

It flowered beautifully and the wasted away over the course of a year.

Thanks for the reminder. When I could not find the picture I realized I never moved hundreds from my old filing system to the new system. Now I have lots of "new" pictures with which to play.

I have Cochleanthes amazonica and marginata and enjoy them both. They bud and bloom several times a year. Keep them in low light and moist, never let them get dry. I'm relatively (ok, very) novice with orchid culture and these are definitely easy to grow, great for beginnners. I'm in So. Florida, intense summer heat but a fan blowing on them takes care of stagnant air.

I had a look at this other one you purchased, Agsm. Blue Butterfly...quite lovely. I'm curious now.

Enjoy them both.

Jbiglio,
I have Cochleanthes Amazing from a local grower ARBEC's (who you may know since you're close to Maryland and he's in all the shows). Coch has been very responsive for me. It's on a window sill facing south and I do keep it pretty moist, and it reblooms often (3 times a year!?) with single white flowers that tend to hide under the leaf fans. Good luck!
