Dendrobium potting mixture

As a novice I'm learning about potting mixtures. What kind of mixture do dendrobiums like? They are outside with bright eastern light. I live near the So. California coast. Now that we're having some rainy days - is there any special care they need? Thanks

Hello Nancy and welcome to the forum,

For nobile-type, phal-type, and antelope-type dendrobiums, I use medium bark, medium charcoal and medium perilite. Oh and I use that same mix or smaller for my Dendrobium kingianum andkingianum hybrids. My dockrilla are all mounted except for one whichis in a basket of the mix mentioned above. My Dendrobium tetragonum are all mounted.

What kind of dendrobiums do you have?

Hi Nancy,
I use a mixture similar to what Kevin uses. It works great for me.

lava rock in clay pots. they grow pretty vigorously. they usually bloom.

i have a baby stratiotes that's in a mix of sphag/aliflor at the moment; over the summer that will probably go into bark/aliflor, and then next year (provided it's bigger) into lava/aliflor and then plain old lava when it's big enough.
