Someone asked this a few months ago.....was it you? That thread is still probably around.

Follow-up: well I must be having deja vu 'cause I can't find any old threads on this topic. So.....

I've heard from various growers and breeders (but have no first hand experience to verify) that smaller orchids (minis) bloom faster out of flask. Jason Fischer (on another forum) has talked about Paph bellatullum hybrids which he has bloomed 3 years out of flask. When I lived in the US and shopped at Taylor Orchids all the time, he had phal seedlings blooming in the compot only about a year to a year and a half out of flask. They were smaller phals, not true minis but not standards. This is definitely true with many paphs, that the plants which are smaller when mature bloom sooner out of flask. Species and hybrids from the Brachypetalum section of paphs (bellatulum, niveum, godefroyae, concolor) and their hybrids can bloom as lettle as 3 years out of flask.

Anywhere from 3 to 15 years depending on which one you're talking about. Like I said above, the small Brachys only about 3, Paph rothschildianum close to about 15. Most Maudiaes about 3-5.

Dendrobiuums bloom fastest 12-18 months from seed.

This morning I noticed 3 spikes in a Disa compot that had been deflasked without tubers 3-4 months ago. I doubt the plants were older than 12-15 months at deflasking. I removed the spikes immediately so, unfortunately, no photo's.

Jerry, I'm also curious to know which Dendrobiums will flower 12-18 months from seed.

Yeah, me too, a year form seed? Not out of flask, but from seed? From tiny dust-like seed to flower in a year and a half? That sounds a little too good to be true.

I have den. phal. type (Sarapee x Prateep) that usually take 3 months from tiny keiki to mature and 1 month to flower, that's a total of 4 months from baby to flowering!
(This is OT, you're talking about from seed to blooming, not from keiki.)

I'm actually surprised that a Dendrobium would bloom in that short a time. Most that I have grown need a few canes under their belt before they're big enough to flower. I know it's not uncommon for some Sarcochilus to bloom while still in the flask although that's usually after 18-24 months in the flask when they're ready to come out.

As for quick flowering orchids, I have had Thelymitra and Diuris flower in 18-24 months from seed.
