Help with my Cymbidium Orchid

Hello everyone,

I have had my orchid now for 1 year as I received it for Valentines day last year. At this time it had 3 flowering stems on it and looked wonderful. After the flowers died I cut the stems and have watered and feed it but it has not reflowered yet just lots of green leaves!

I was hoping that it would have reflowered by now so obviously I am doing something wrong.

Please could you help me enjoy this plant again.

Many thanks in advance

Anya

Hi Anya and welcome to the forum! Cymbidiums need LOTS of light but no hot, direct sun. They are also difficult to grow indoors, which I am assuming you must do for at least part of the year.

Since I am able to grow mine outdoors all year I will let someone else field this one for you. If you have new green leaves, this is good. Chances are just a move to a brighter location will do the trick for you.

The other thing is, they do need a cold snap to bring them to life as far as spiking is concerned.

If they are warm all the time, they will just grow new leaves and not much else.

Maybe Tom can offer some help, he is up north of you and grows all sorts indoors.

If it has lots of green leaves then you must be growing it o.k. Like Anton said they need a cold snap in the fall to make the bloom spikes.

As I understand it, we can put them outside for the summer (after the frosts) and then bring them in again in October? But I'm no expert.

Hello & welcome
If your cym has nice, dark, lovely looking growth its not getting enough light. The leaves should be a light green color. They do need a nice cooling period in the late summer/early fall. I give mine a lot of early morning sun then filtered light the rest of the day. I leave mine out year round, only protecting them if the temps drop below 35. That means that I have to protect them from cold only 5-10 days a winter. Others on this forum will advise you what you have to do to grow them in your area.

Thank you for all your advise. The leaves are quite a dark green in colour which means that it is not getting enough light but it is in my bow bay window and that is as much light as we get in Kent!!! You have also mentioned that it needs a cold snap in the fall. So is this a good idea to put it into the garden now because although the sun is out and it is one of the best February's that we have had it is rather cold a night still!?!
Thanks again to everyone that has replied.
Anya

anyaandkids,

Putting your cymbid out in the cold now will most likely only slow down any new growth that has started. Cymbids need the cool in the autumn which is when their sipikes are initiated then they go on to bloom in winter.

How cold do your winter nights get?
