Sun blocking fabric

I would like to shield orchids that are kept outdoors from direct sun in the late afternoon. Where can I buy the sun shield fabric used in greenhouses that is graded by its percentage of sun blocking ability? Thanks.

the shield fabric you need is called shade cloth

Look for any place in your area that handles a product called SHADE CLOTH. Greenhouse or Gardening supplies. There are a lot of places that sell it on the internet, but the most cost effective place will probably be from a local supplier. It usually comes on a giant roll like carpeting and you order it by the foot - comes in widths like 16 foot or 24 foot. I actually also found a local place that sold precut pieces 16 foot square - but only in 55%. It also comes in many different amounts of cover - approximately 30-70% - here is a site just to give you some ideas of some of the types that are available - Shade Cloth

If you try the garden supply companies, either catalogue or online you should be able to find what you need. You should also be able to find it locally at a good nursery. If they don't have it ask. They may order it for you and that will save you the shipping. Tony M

Check big box stores in the spring or someplace like Tractor Supply. Any store that sells assembled chain link dog pens will carry it. The percentage is usually 50%.

Google FarmTek and you can buy any percentage shade cloth you need from them, cut to order.

I have seen it at Home Depot and Lowe's year round here, certainly in Tampa too.

At my place here, different color represents different shade percentage. E.g., black is about 50%, green about 30%, etc. The distance from the shade to the plant plays a part also.

Just get the right one for your type of orchids.
