i was given a beautifull orchid as a birthday present stands about 2 feet tall with long straight stems which were covered in pink blooms it lasted the best part of a month but now that all the flowers have gone the stems appear to be dying off? my question is do i cut them back all the way to the bulb or not ? peter.turner

I never cut anything all of the way back if it is still green. You can cut back all of the dead stems but be careful to sterilize your cutting tools.
