lots of new roots

Hi and hello to everyone, I am new here but seeking some advice. I have a Phal orchid which I have had for about four years, it always flowers but last year I felt it needed repotting. I repotted it in 'orchid bark compost' from my garden centre and since doing this it seems to have grown lots of new roots which are sticking up out of the pot, originally I thought they were new shoots! but then a new shoot also came up and is growing well. I am a little concerned about the roots and not sure what to do. My other concern is the the leaves are quite big and when the new shoot flowers I am worried that the weight of the leaves will tip the plant and cause the new shoot to break. Any advice would be gratefully received. many thanks in advance

Hi michaela and welcome to the forum!!! You will get lots of great advice here.
Phals commonly grow what are know as aerial roots and they are perfectly normal. Posting pictures will help tremendously in your case, as well as updating your profile so we know where you grow your orchids. If you have your plant potted in plastic and worry about tipping over, leave it in the pot it is in and place the entire thing into something heavier, like a ceramic pot.

Michaela,Welcome to the forum. Someone will be able to help with almost any orchid problem you have... I have a Phal like yours. It is in a 10-inch plastic pot. The leaves are about a foot long and to keep it upright, I put the plastic pot in a larger clay pot (or use ceramic like PhalPal said) for the extra weight. When I water, I can take the plastic pot out of the clay pot and just carry that to the sink...Hope this helps you out.

Post a pic of your Phal when it blooms...We'd love to see it...

Hi Thank you for your reply, my orchid is in a plastic pot and inside a ceramic pot, if I feel that it is still one-sided I will get a larger pot.
