fragrance in dendrobiums?

I have a den in bloom and has been for months now. When it started blooming I noticed that it had a fragrance. Is this common in dens? It's colors are white and purple. When the flowers bloomed the white was greenish.
The parents are Den. Pretty Misaki x Den. Madame Vipa. This was a 3 dollar pick up at Lowe's The name may not be correct. It was wrapped in foil so maybe it is correct.
thanks
cassie

Fragrance is not uncommon in dendrobiums. My Den tetragonums smell a bit like vanilla and my Den Yukadarumi (sp?) smells like raspberry with peppercorns. Also I've grown Den antenatum and that is fragrant as well. I mention antenatum because sometimes this or other antelope dendrobiums are used in breeding the complex hybrids like yours.

Madame Vipa is a Den phalaenopsis type if that helps at all. The other parent is unregistered.

I've been an avid african violet grower in the past. This is one of the things that violets are lacking- fragrance! I'm hoping that that too, will be hybridized into them soon- but for now, I'll enjoy the fragrance of my dendrobian!

If I'm not mistaken, in order for a cross to be registered, the parents must also be registered. The parentage should be listed in the RHS database. I'll check it out to see what I can find out.

I was under the impression the latter was the correct spelling ???
