Container question.

Hello,

I'm brand new to orchid growing, but I'm an experienced gardener so I'm hoping I won't kill my new plants.

I was given two phalaenopsis, 'Wedding Promenade' and 'amabailis' for Christmas along with a container. The ceramic pot is glazed on the inside and outside and has holes on all four sides of it. My question is: is this the correct pot to use with this variety of orchid, would I be better off just using a clear container?

My problem is the person who gave me the pot will notice if I don't put the orchids in the pot he gave me. Sigh...

Thanks for your help,

Barb

I am pretty new at this also, but normally pots with holes in the side are meant for Ochids so I believe you should be good. I am sure someone who is better at this than me will jump in. Tony M.

Hi Gromit's Mom, Welcome to the forum You'll find a lot of friendly folk here and someone will be able to answer almost any question you have orchid-wise.

A lot of the members here grow in glazed ceramic pots. Aside from their decorative value, the orchid roots will not adhere to the glazed sides of the pot. This minimizes the damage that might be done when you re-pot. You're all set to grow and don't have to worry about hurting your friend's feelings...

Hi, you could also pot your orchid in a see-through plastic pot and then slip it into the glazed pot.

That would be my vote as well. Many people grow their plants in plastic and then move them to places in the home to enjoy during the bloom period and during this time place them inside a decorative ceramic pot. Once blooming is over you can put another blooming orchid or other plant into the decorative plant - thereby cycling multiple plants for show and saving on expensive pots.

Also, you do not want to pot them together in one pot. Seems we just had a post about potting two Vandas together. You might want to find and read that. The answers apply in this case also.
