care of orchids

Ok with all the hybrids that are out there, How do you tell which are kept in a similar fashion as a Cattleya? That way I dont have to keep asking everyone. I now know that Pot. Hoku Gem 'Freckles' & Laelia anceps have similar care to a Cat as well as my early Christmas present from my wife Blc. Chia Lin 'New City' AM/AOS.

what you need to do is read the culture sheets from the AOS see link
American Orchid Society - Orchids
also I would recommend going to a library to obtain books on orchids
also may be join an orchid society in your area they have monthly meetings also a great place to learn.

Potinara and Blc are treated like Cattleyas because they have Cattleya Alliance plants in their parentage. The best way to know which plants are to be treated like Cattleyas learn which plants are in the Cattleya Alliance (see starter list below) then learn how to "read" the intergeneric hybrid names. For example, Blc. is Brassolaeliocattleya which contains Brassavolae, Laelia, and Cattleya.

Cattleya Alliance Plants
Cattleyas (of course)
Laelias
Gurainthe
Sophronitis
Brassavolae
Rhyncholaelia
Encyclia
Epidendrum
Schomburgkia
Dialaelia
Broughtonia
Tetramica

Because Cattleya Alliance orchids will not cross with orchids from other alliances (e.g. Oncidium Alliance et. al.) if theres even just one Cattleya Alliance plant in your cross, they'll all be Cattleya Alliance plats in the mix.

Thank you, thats what I was looking for. Even the AOS Cattleya guide sheets dont list the others so I didnt know who's related.
