Lost Mini-Phal

Hi all,

This morning my mini-phal fell off! I assume it was crown rot. The leaves looked ok but there was black and yellow at the crown. I have been so careful - only watering in the morning and avoiding water getting into the crown. It had new leaves but hadn't grown for ages.

The good news is that I still have another phal that looks healthy - all green. Fingers crossed it survives the change in conditions during the winter.

Im sorry about losing your Mini Phal. Maybe it just wasnt meant to be? Maybe it was somehow weak and faulty and nothing you could have done would have stopped the problem from happening.

Im glad you have another one thats happy and healthy

xxxxxx

Sometimes you get a plant that just refuses to live for no reason that can be determined. I have about 35 phals and a work acquaintenance found this out and noted all my beautiful plants at work. She asked if I could take her white phal that had not bloomed in three years and bloom it for her. Since all of mine had been doing great (and still are) I agreed and brought it into the family. About two months later it did EXACTLY what you are describing. The leaves all fell off at the crown in about 1-2 days and IT WAS OVER. I could not believe it! I did nothing differerent with it than all the rest. What could I tell her? In retrospec, there must have been a population of disease organisms that had multiplied in the crown area of this plant prior to my acquisition of it that reacted totally different than my other plants. This was about a year ago and nothing even remotely similar has happened since. So - might not be anything at all you did.

When I first started with orchids I had a Oncidium sugar baby that the ps went mushy on me shortly after bringing it home. Sometimes things just happen for a no reason.

I'm so sorry about your phal. It is so distressing to lose an orchid. Don't beat yourself up about it.
Mike since it was a basic white phal, I would have been tempted to just buy a new one and say "See! it only took me a week to get these two blooming spikes!"

Nope......
I wasn't 100% sure what the original flower looked like or I might have. I might give her another white phal one of these days anyway just to encourage another potential orchid grower. I actually have a couple noid white phals at home in spike that might be good candidates in a month or so?
