My new Neo has the little plastic pot with the feet. I really like it. I saw some on New World Orchid's website, I think they were 3.00 each?

Congrats!!! Brookn, you must be really happy. I know I would be. I didn't think it would bloom from just one fan like that. That's great. I'll ignore the one I just got and see if it'll do anything. Ha! Ha!

Awww thanks for looking Fred. I am really excited about the blooms, but I am just as excited because once it's done blooming it will grow a new fan for me. I love the leaves as much as the blooms hee hee. Another Whoo-Hoo just cause I'm happy. And I was worried about the light level, sheesh.

Thanks solay! Jenny is the expert on that, I am not sure about the blooming off of only one fan, I guess it does happen though!

Cindy -- I know what you mean. My hubby is hinting that I should stop or really slow down on the purchases. But I can't!

Brook -- Congrats! Wait until you smell the fragrance...heavenly.

OOPS!!! I just posted on the other Neo thread by mistake. Oh well. I was saying Jenny mentioned the ink and light possibility but since I also lost a couple of leaves I thought it was sick. Now it is growing new roots so it's fine.

Anyone have a yellow Neo? Oh I want one of those too someday. I'll get a pink one first though since less expensive.

I have a yellow-orange Neo, Ogonmaru. It hasn't bloomed for me, yet.

I want a bright yellow one, but don't have $100+ to spend...yet.

While we're on the topic, lets indulge our addictions a bit...

These are the varieties I want to buy:

Kibana -- yellow flowers.
Suikaden -- white flowers with green tips. this is the only "green" flowers I'm interested in.
Benisuzume -- pink flowers in a different way than Shutennou.
Gekkeikan -- I don't like stripped variegation much but you gotta have one at least

I've seen some other ones that I can't remember. I'm also more interested in foliage varieties than flower varieties. I saw a variegated bean leaf that is super rare (super expensive!).

Maggots?

I checked my new Neos again to see if they still had signs of pests. In my Houmeiden, I saw this silvery stuff which on closer inspection looked like cobwebs or dried snail slime. I poked and prodded to see if there was anything moving and found a maggot! Immediately, I gave it another dose of 3-in-1 spray and waited a minute. Checked again and the thing was crawling with maggots which were trying to escape the chemicals. I picked out as much as I could, about a dozen. There's probably more in there. Their gut was green indicating they were eating something... I'm guessing the algae growing on the sphag.

EEEEwwwww. I'm creeped out.

Could it be white flies or just fungal gnats???? Giant fungal gnats?

I use Brookn's recipe to kill and wash all the critters. Spraying it too often with chemicals might stress it.

Cindy -- I definitely will, if it blooms for me.

bkim -- I have a Benisuzume, but think it might not bloom this year as it got mite infested. I did catch it early and was able to treat it. Anyway, I'm still hoping it'll bloom. And, yes, gotta have, at least, one variegated one.

Quadruple eeewwwwww!

Hey everyone! I just got back from the San Jose show in California. I met Satomi from Seed Engei...and he's a SHE! What's really funny is that she knows that a lot of people think she's a guy. She wanted me to spread the word that she's female...LOL..even funnier is that she's my age...20's early 30's. Anyways, she was very nice and helpful when it came to choosing plants. Apparently, her father is the one who has the big nursery in Japan and she brings them here to the U.S. to sell. She was saying that she's leaving next Tuesday for Japan, probably for more stock. I took a picture of her and her booth which I will post shortly.

Button!
In all of my emails I thought she was a he!

I'll have to send an apology.

That's good to know. A face to a name is much better. Are you going to see her again? If you do, tell her I am sorry!

button,

I agree. Satomi was very nice, patient and helpful. I can hardly wait for her to finish the website, so I can shop...uh...browse for new Neos.

She'll be back in July and will start selling on eBay then.

I was able to get a species Neo, a Hisui (green), and a Shutenno (white/red), and a Sedirea japonica...pictures coming.

But yeah, Satomi is a she...it was hilarious that she knew that many people think she's a guy though...lol.

Satomi estimated that it should be up in a month. I also forgot to mention that Seed Engei put together a book that shows the different types of leaves/flowers and care information in English. They have it on eBay for $20 and also had it at the show.

bkim,
Your maggots are not any stage of whitefly. They are probably fungus gnat larva.

Thank you for the confirmation. I figured as much when I saw two of them fly out of the packing material when I opened the box. The 3-in-1 spray is also a fungicide so I should be ok.

All this talk of neos has inspired me! My brother is just getting ready to start his first year of college in the fall majoring in Japanese and international Business. As part of his degree he will have to go to Japan! SO I started learning Japanese on Friday in ramaji. I already know about 10 sentences and various words!!! I am so excited. I will go to Japan and shop till I drop. He is going to give me his old text books and help me learn. Lol, at this point I already know more Japanese than him. My plan is that by the time he does go to Japan I will know the kanji so I can actually read stuff. Yay!

Kortney, I wish I could learn a new language. I barely speak Burmese and flunked Spanish in high school. Japanese is soooo hard. Hope you learn it and do some great shopping!

new plant!

My Neofinetia Kutsuwamushi arrived today!! I love it, can't wait for it to bloom. I also got the book and two black clay Neo pots.

I put the Kutsuwamushi right into the clay pot....it looks sooo cute! I am saving the other pot for my next special Neo.

Kortney -- I will have to keep building my list until then.

April -- That's a very nice Neo. pot. I got the plastic Neo pots from Satomi, but just ordered a few ceramic Neo. pots from NWO (New World Orchids). Oh, I also ordered a couple more Neos from NWO. Shhhh... Don't tell my hubby.

Arlene

Which ones did you get?

I really like the pot, too. I was surprised at how light it was.

April, I think the pots are cute too. I at first didn't think I like the mound of moss and the pot. I changed my mind. I kinda like it now. I also tried it mounted on cork and I like that too. What don't I like?!!!

Arlene, you are bad! I can't get anything past my husband right now. Such a pain! I've been eying some from NWO too for a while. Post pics. when you get the pots and the Neos. Lucky you.

April -- I ordered Issuhime and a rainbow hybrid (Darwinara Charm x Neo. falcata).

Cindy -- Oh, I've already sneaked in 3 new Tolumnias today. Shhh... I know I need to slow down. I'm already dipping into my savings for the greenhouse tour later this month!

Does anyone know a good place to get affordable ceramic furan pots? The traditionally made ones are $60+ and I'm trying to find one thats lower in price.

Arlene, you are bad. I wish I had a savings for orchids. Right now I think I'm in the negative in terms of orchid money. I wish I could have gone with you on the tour. If there's another one later this year, keep me in mind again.

ButtOn, I saw some on e-bay but it was handmade one that looked kinda cool but not quite traditional. It has leaf patterns/Chinese writing. I think someone also bought some from New World Orchid website.

Button

I found some on the Orchid Web, website. They have the plain black and a fancy one. They are 20.00-40.00.

You could also try ebay.

Arlene- make sure you post a picture of your new Neo's when they come! I should be getting my Furan in a couple of days.

Go to Dollar General and Family Dollar. Keep your eyes peeled. Sometimes you can find pots when you least expect it and they don't sell them as what's intended. Also Big Lots and Hobby Lobby stores might too. A friend told me that she was making some oriental decorations and found all kinds of stuff, told me to check it out.

A collector is selling some of their Neos. Great prices for the varieties. Plants look good too.

eBay Seller: hoen0017: Yard, Garden Outdoor Living, Home Garden items on eBay.com

I'd love to get these but can't at the moment, so I hope someone here does. Good luck!

Neo's on the way!

Just wanted to share, my Neofinetia falcata Furan should be here tomorrow and I am also getting a Neofinetia Shu Ten Nou! I am very excited about getting that one! I love pink (and red). I should have it by the end of the week.

I will post pictures when they arrive!

Brook, thanks for the information on the pots. I looked at NWO and those are cute pots for 3 for 25.00. I might have to get some! Are they very lightweight?

thanks!

Watering

Anyone worried about watering & getting buds / blooms wet? I water everyday and I'm going to have a hard time getting all the aerial roots wet without getting neighboring spikes wet. Ive heard that you shouldn't get buds and blooms wet but I'd like to hear other opinions on this.

I would also be interested in hearing what others say. When I mist, the buds and blooms get wet and so far have not had any problems.

Here are my recent purchases of Neos. They arrived last Friday, June 6th.

Left: Furankohai (Neofinetia falcata x Darwinara Charm). This is the Rainbow Neo, a hybrid which can produce rose-lavender (Benihime), dark purple (Murasakihime), lavender (Fujihime), or yellow-green (Yuhime) blooms.

Right: Neofinetia falcata 'Isuhime'. It's a mini. It has 5growths.

Arlene they look great. Healthy and nicely potted. I love the mini. SOOOO CUTE!!! I want one too. Adorable.

So the rainbow one is a surprise color or one plant will bloom different colors all at once? Very interesting.

Arlene,

Those are beautiful! I love the mini! Will the flowers bloom close to the plant or out farther?

How fun on the Rainbow! Can't wait to see what you get!

Well, I am sad to say, that my Neo buds have blasted. They had just started growing their spurs, and were looking fine. I went to look at it yesterday, and the entire spike was turning a lovely shade of banana. Today two of the buds have started to turn brown. I am so bummed, I was really looking forward to it. There was no culture change, no location change, treated it the same as always. It was watered a few days ago with distilled water like I always use, I have no clue. The only thing I can think of is that I sprayed it with Bayer for the black roots that had started (which it cleared nicely), but that was before I even knew it was in spike. Ah well, you win some, you lose some I guess.

bkim -- I do plan on letting it grow into a specimen plant.

brook -- Sorry to hear about the spike. It sounds like Bayer was the cause. I'm sure it won't be long until it your Neo. spikes again.

Brookn~ More than likely the Bayer was the culprit. When my Neo came into bloom, I sprayed Bayer on it as a gnat figher and not even a week later the blooms fell. I didn't even get a pic up to show everyone the blooms. Depressing. Now I stick to the Recipe.

Sounds like just the blooms or spikes are negatively effected not the leaves. I will remember that if mine ever puts out a spike.

Total bummer. I sprayed before I even knew there was a spike ARGHHHH! Now I know. Thing is, it had black rotten roots when I got it, I cut them off (it was bad) and I used my recipe faithfully (after all, it is a really good recipe hee hee). In the super humidity of MO. though (the a/c is on and I still got 64% humidity on the hygrometer), some of the ones that had been good when I repotted were still turning black on me, so I used the durned Bayer as a stopgap measure. I didn't want to repot, I like sphag, and I like the mounding of the Neos, so I was scared I was gonna lose the plant. I guess it's better to save the plant, even if I sacrificed the spike and blooms SIGH. The roots all look great finally, the black stopped on them, and it has a new leaf coming up. I guess it's a lesson for all of us Neo growers, that when they are in spike they are very finicky. Funny, these have been the easiest plants for me to grow until now. Thanks for the heads up Jenny, now we know, I wondered why I never got to see those blooms of yours lol. That stinks for both of us! I was so excited about it!! Now I go back to chanting at them to grow hee hee. As Jenny would say OH POOT!!

Any idea how many years did it take to become a specimen size plant?

I agree about having a Neo. falcata section in orchid species.

I too can't wait to see this in bloom. Anticipation is such a killer.
