WIB is on a distinguished road
ID: No idea

A memeber of my garden club brought an Oncidium alliance orchid to the clinic this evening. The tag said: Dag. Toy Soldier 'Volcano Queen.' We divided and repotted it (I know . . . but this was meant to be a demonstration, with a disclaimer about repotting at this time of year. )

At any rate, I can't ID it beyond the alliance. I don't even know what a "Dag" is. It seems to be used as a grex name for a Cymbidium, but I can confidently say that ain't what this is. Anyone recognize this plant? -- Bill

Degarmoara Toy Soldiers 'Volcano Queen' is the full name. Degarmoara is an oncidium intergeneric using the three genera, Brassia, Miltonia, and Odontoglossum. Not sure why the tag says Dag, but it was either misspelled, or else the 'a' is actually an 'e'.

The tag identifies the orchid. Dag. is the (incorrect) abbreviation for Degarmoara. Degarmoara is an Oncidium alliance intergeneric (made up of several different genera). So the name of your plant is: Degarmoara Toy Soldier 'Volcano Queen'. The correct abbreviation for Degarmoara is Dgmra.

Here is a pic of what the blooms will be similar to.

The different genera that make up Degarmoara are: Brassia, Miltonia, and Odontoglossum.

I have this plant and actually my blooms look somewhat different than the picture noted on that link. It is more of a muted look with not as much contrast - maybe cultural? I will see if I can chase down a pic later. The plant grows like a "weed". mike

Well first off it's a complex hybrid so there will probably be quite a bit of variation in the cross (which is why I discourage ID by picture matching), secondly, culture can have an affect but except for certain genera it will be within a reasonablly narrow range of possibilities. More muted colours wiht less contrast is probably comfortably within the range of differences possible form a complex hybrid.

I am, once again, in debt to the Orchidgeeks. Many thanks! (I should have been more diligent in considering Degamoara when I went down the list.) -- Bill

Here is the pic of a flower from my plant - not the best picture, but you get the idea - just a snapshot in my office window.
