| Blooming Cattleyas A have noted several threads talking about budding and blooming catts. I have a few blooming now as well. (Lc. Jungle Elf X Sc. Beaufort) 'Lakeland' A noid from safeway - I believe it to be an Iwanagara 'Apple Blossom' ? Lc Mem. Robert Strait 'Lakeland' - a plant I rescued from the clearance shelf at Lowes a few years ago! mike |

| Mayres, Your Catts are spectacular!!! The plants look quite healthy and the blooms look very healthy! I believe you are correct in your ID of the second orchid as Iwangaara Apple Blossom. It bears all of the typical Apple Blossom characteristics. The firs cross (Beaufort x jungle Elf) has been registered. It is Sc. Jungle Beau. i'm suspicious of the cultivar name 'Lakeland'. I suspect it is not a legit cultivar name because a cross wiht the parents listed would never have a cultivar name attached. Also, Apple Blossom is the grex (hybrid name) and not a cultivar name so Apple Blossom should not appear in single quotation marks. It should look like this: Iwanagara Apple Blossom.

| Mike, you've been holding out on us. Your name has always been synonymous with Phals to me. I never knew this about you.... I can't tell you what it does for me when I see these exquisite flowers. There's just nothing as beautiful. All orchids are beautiful but Cattleyas are just a little more beautiful-er! And yours are magnificent. You are The Man! |

| Thanks everyone for the comments. When I see one of these beauties blooming I grab it and run into another part of our home and "throw" it in front of my wife, "Look at this! Isn't it fantastic!" And she says, "yea.......nice.....". But there is no enthusiasm. Nice to be able to share with others as well and know that you can visualize something special with me. Sea Sun - right or wrong, most of my plants are on trays of rocks. I figure it can't hurt to give them a little extra humidity. Tobi & Sandra - I'm definately the most comfortable with phals, but have a number of other genera to keep them company - some of which do nicely and others continue to challenge the conditions I have available for them. If only these catts would bloom as long as phals - though the yellow one noted has been in full bloom since the middle of October and still looks pretty nice! |

| Yes, these particular ones were out all summer until about a month ago. I will post some pics over the next few days of my red catts and other plants to show the effects of T5 fluorescents - some worse than others. The younger catts (I guess this is logical) seem to be most affected. |

| Favorite phals or favorite orchids? Either way the response will be difficult. In some cases your favorites become thus because of the history behind them as much as the flower itself. Also the plants themselves when not blooming can be very enchanting - such as some of my paphs - which have wonderful foliage. The third cattleya noted above is a wonderful plant even when not in bloom. It is not too small and not too large - and the plant structure gives one a sense of strength and vitality - the five buds (soon to be all in flower) just really put this plant over the top now. |

| I guess that was a dumb question. I think with all the plants you have it would be difficult to pick favorites anyway. I also like the vigor of that plant. How long have you had it? I know you'll post another picture of it when in full bloom. I'll look forward to seeing it. |

| Fabulous flowers and very healthy looking plants ! I love cattleyas but have only 4 ( versus about 50 phals) I started with phals but am finding out (its my misconception/mindset about them being 'harder' )that I can grow cattleyas as the two I bought last year in bloom are both going to flower in the next month ...so guess I'll be buying more ! thank you for sharing your photos with us. |

| If they do have a fragrance I have not picked it up. Truthfully I have not purposefully checked. I will have to do so. If they do have fragrance it is not as strong as many other orchids I have. When they are in a room with other plants and the fan going the fragrance from a few small blooms tends to get mixed up with the overall room "fragrance". |

| My 'favorite' orchid changes everyday. It depends what I am looking at at the time.

| This plant is just so gorgeous right now that I just HAD to share another picture - all five buds now open! Cattleyas have not typically been my favorite genera, but this one has just got me mesmerized. I think I know what you mean Phalpal - I was looking at a green and white miniature cymbidium earlier today too - YOWSER! My favorite is constantly changing too!
