Orchid Care Video

Thought this would be of interest. The cultural recommendations given in this video clip are specifically for Phalaenopsis, which are the orchids pictured in the clip. Unfortunately they don't mention this in the clip so don't use this culture info generally on all orchids.

And Finally Winter Orchids

This may be timely for the Northern Hemishericals. The cultural recommendations given in this video clip are specifically for Cymbidiums, which are the orchids pictured in the clip. Unfortunately they don't mention this in the clip so don't use this culture info generally on all orchids. There's also a factual error in this clip in that they say the fancy hybrid Cymbidiums are epiphytic but they are not. They are semi-terrestrial.

I'm kind of dissappointed in these, especially the first one and the last one which were exclusively about Phals and Cymbidiums respectively, yet neither clip even once mentions the name Phalaenopsis or Cymbidium. Since in each video they only ever use the general term "orchid" you'd think the things they said (Phal care or Cymbidium care) would apply to all orchids. They present a care regimen specific to one genus as if it applied to all orchids. I think it is potentially quite confusing, especially to those who can't pick up on all of the unspoken info.

I have to agree with Kmarch. Just throwing the term "orchid" around and not giving specifics doesn't help a newbie one bit...One person with a Phal and another with a Cym are going to have two totally different culture sheets on care! *BUT* the videos do help in raising interest and intrigue into the next would be orchid geek. Still love the videos Anton, awesome!

In response to the above, I humbly submit that these videos were not necessarily meant to be precise tutorials, but to further entice the viewer (and just maybe do a little marketing?!)

I enjoyed them. These were great little videos to watch. Thanks!

I'm all for enticing people into growing orchids (I encourage people to grow orchids every chance I get) and doing a little marketing (one of my previous jobs was as a marketing officer), but it is possible to entice and market while supplying accurate information and preventing confusion further down the road. It wouldn't have compromised the enticing quality of the clip to have started out by saying somethign like, "There are many kinds of orchids, but today we're looking at one of the most popular, Phalaenopsis." It's great to bring new hobbiests into the fold, but lets start them off on the right foot instead of confusing them.

Would you be interested in making one on Paphs Kevin ?

If you are, you can do the presenting, and I'll direct, video and edit it if you like. I am talking top quality production, not second rate.

Send me an Email if you would be interested in a project.
