Appearance of Leaves on Phalaenopsis Spike

Hi! I'm a new member to your wonderful website and I'm also a new orchid enthusiast.
I bought my Phalaenopsis orchid with blooms last year. After it bloomed I trimmed the spike down to the next node where it bloomed one more time. Afterwards, I trimmed it again down to the next node and now at the top of the spike it's growing leaves. What is it doing? Is it having a baby? I thought the babies usually grow from the roots of the plant.

welcome anne!

i am not an expert on phals, but yours is definitely growing a leaf where it had flowers. i have not seen this before, the only "babies" i have seen were growing from the basal area as you mentioned! hopefully someone can explain better, what is going on here. your phal looks really good, otherwise!

Hi,
You have what is called a keiki. It is growing from the cut part of the spike and it is common. Some phals will produce keiki upon keiki this way, Phal pulchra is one that comes to mind. When it's roots reach a length of about 2 inches you can remove it and pot it, then you have another plant the same as it's mother. Pikevi has one that he has wrapped the roots in sphag and mesh so as to facilitate it going into medium more easily. Maybe he will weigh in on this with his technique.

Nature has formed orchid flowers in such a way that, unless they make us laugh, they surely excite our greatest admiration." Jacob Breynius

Definitely a keiki (baby). Leave it to grow, giving it support as you have, and wait for the roots to get to about 2" in length. Agreed, pikevi, can chime in with his experience.

Congratulations!

Welcome to the forum Anne H.

What you have is a keiki or an exact duplicate (clone) of the 'parent' in every respect.

I think many suggest that it be left alone until some roots develop and then remove to be planted separately.

As brookn and vivienne mentioned I just treid to wrap the keiki in potting medium and it seems to work better. Attached are photos for you to look at: the first one in Aug. and the second one in Oct.

Today I found that roots are emerging from the mesh that is wrapped around the base.

Good luck with yours.
