worm farm

Well since my wife claims I never do anything half way (unless it’s on her honey do list), I bought a pre-fad 5 tray worm farm so I can grow my own worm tea. Anybody got any experience with this? (also anyone know where I can get a tiny tractor for the farm?)

The tractor is not the problem, it is trying to get them to pee into the tiny bottles.

Did that worm farm come with instructions plus worms and bedding ?

I am assuming you have the equivalent of "CanOWorms "

Essentially you need to site it in a dry warm corner
put the bedding material /compost in the next tray up from the base section (which i assume has a tap ).......... plus the worms

Then you add kitchen scraps/peelings /crushed egg shells/shredded paper / meat and fish scraps/fish bones and in a couple of weeks you will find liquid has dripped into the base tray and a fine brown compost is being produced
as the first tray fills up you can put scraps into the next tray up and the worms will migrate upwards when they are ready

A couple of times a year you will see thousands of tiny white baby worms and sometimes "a great escape" if things get overcrowded

Just love Orchids

I always thought meat was a no, no in any kind of compost pile. I would think it would begin to smell and create other issues before the worms could break it down. Tony M.

Actually the instructions do tell you no dairy or meet products. Have you had a problem with smells and can it be kept in an unheated garage for the winter?

I have had my worm farm for about 5-6 yrs.
My instructions from the worm people says no meat, citrus or onions.

If you feed scraps/peelings /crushed egg shells/shredded paper, there should be no smell. My WF smells damp, no bad odour. In fact it is suppose to smell like the floor of the rain forest? I have never been to a rain forest!

My worm farm is out in the garen all year round, our winter is mild, lowest min would be about 2C (average night min would be around >8C).

My tip would be to catch all the worm tea in a separate bin/ container and leave the tap turn on at all times (ie. the tap which is always 'on' with the bin underneath).

This is because the lower tray needs to drained regulary every few days, otherwise the little worms would drown on the tier above.

If you leave the tap on, there would be no issues with the worm tea over flowing and the winter rain.
I don't know if I make sense.

Anyway, I think everyone should have a worm farm, it is great for the orchids/ garden and the environment! How good is 'free' fertilizer'!

That is my 2 cents!
