| My guess is that by the time it grows leaves and roots a couple inches long it will be no problem at all to remove. As a matter of education keep us informed from time to time with your GOOD pics! |

| I don't know how common it is but it will be fine if left alone. After it gets a certain size it wil looke like you have a 2-growth Phal and send out its own spikes.

| pikevi, you've got that magic touch when it comes to keikis on Phals. I'm betting that it will grow just fine and will find it's way with room to grow roots without getting choked. One of my Phals is growing, what appears to be a keiki but I'm not sure? It looks like a tiny little Phal. growing on the outside of the low part of the crown. If I remember correctly, I think I read that if a keiki grows in the middle of the crown, it's curtains for the plant but I didn't know keikis grew on anything other than spikes so I'm not sure what's going on. Anyway, another great growing there pikevi! |

| New Baby Photo Pikevi, about this time last year I had a basal Keiki, (see above) I took the advice of KMARCH and left well alone and it's looking good. Good luck.

| So ,that is the basal keiki! I was under the impression that they come off the 'mother plant' itself. Thanks for the advice. I did not conceptualise a 'two growth' plant until I saw the pictures I will leave it as it is.

| I think basal does mean off the side of the mother plant, but as long as they are well connected, I guess there is little effective difference, except that the one on the flower spike might separate from the mother more or less easily or do so automatically. Time will tell if this is going to happen.

| tizzycat, is this recent photo you posted the same as that little keiki from last year? That makes me very excited. I've been wanting a Phal keiki and I think I have 2 starting. Interesting, they're both growing on species Phals. pikevi, I never knew what a basal keiki and regular keiki were either. Here's mine....hoping it's a keiki... ![]() |

| I found this one on one of my Phals. This one looks like a text book example of a basal keiki. I think yours as well as tizzycat's are the same. The keikis on yours and tizzycat's seem to come from the axil(s) of the leaf. mine comes off the 'stem' of the plant. This was a tiny growth just a couple of weeks ago. It just grew big in a short time. There is NO way one could separate it from the mother unless some surgical technique is used. As per all of your advice I will leave both of them together.

| It has become very popular for growers to pot two Phals in the same pot. The plant looks much more impressive. This is becoming more popular as growers have to stop growing specimen plants because of the expense. Multiple plantings are much cheaper. I have started potting three Nobile Dens in a single 6 inch pot. When they bloom I will post a photo. I think you will enjoy letting it grow as is.
