| Dendrobium I have a Den. Dragon White that has sent out a flower spike and a new leaf shoot. Most things that I have read say to let Den's go dormant for the winter & watering sparingly. since its activly growing and blossoming, I don't think it would be good to cut back on the care and feeding of this plant. Any opinions. Thanks |

| Hi depends on if this is a noblile-type or phaleaenopsis-type. With the phal-types Tobi reccomended to me to water every 7-14 days and fert. approx once a month. With the nobile-type best to cut the water and fert. letting them rest for the winter.

They take on the form of little birds, of lizards, of insects, a man, a woman, sometimes like a clown who excites our laughter. They represent the image of a lazy tortoise, a melancholy toad, an agile, ever-chattering monkey. Nature has formed orchid flowers in such a way that, unless they make us laugh, they surely excite our greatest admiration." Jacob Breynius |

| Hi Hummer, I am not familiar with a Den. Dragon White, but I do have a Den. King Dragon which is a Phalaenopsis type Dendrobium. There is a Den. draconis which is commonly known as the Dragon Dendrobium, but that is a nobile type Den. which requires a cool dry rest during the winter months. Is your new flower spike coming from between the top 2 leaves on the cane? If it is, it is probably a Phal. type Den. Although they usually produce new growth and spike in the spring, they have been known to grow and flower at any time. I now have one that is producing 2 spikes from 2 canes. If I have new growth or a flower spike, then I continue to water every 7-10 days and fertilize every other week even during the winter. If no activity is happening, then as Brook stated , I cut back the watering to 10-14 days depending on the medium you are using (this is for bark, which is what I use) and fertilize only every 4-5 weeks. I have had good results growing them this way for a few years now. |
