| Den. 'Carmela' That's the genus and the cultivar name. There should be a grex in between the two. Is there any other name with it?

| I am sorry Sara that I cannot be of much help. But we have something in common. I bought a few dying Dens and potted them in my own mix and some are showing new growth after almost 6 months. What I did was to pot them in a mix of coconut hush chips (medium), fir bark and a little sphagnum moss and perlite and kept them indoors under plant lights. They were never exposed to the sun. Two of them are still green but no new growth in almost 7 months. I will try and post the Dens with new growths tomorrow. As for Cattleyas I have them potted in primarily Coconut chips but they were in reasonably good shape to begin with. I hope some one will come to your aid soon. Good luck.

Unfortunately the nursery or place you bought your orchid from has handed you a bit fo a name-mess. 1) There is no Dendrobium registered with the name Kasen White. The closest thing that came up was a Den Karen, which is white. So I suspect the plant is Den. Karen and the white was just stuck on so the nursery could remember what colour the flower was. Feel free to drop the "White" as its meaningless. 2) Because the cross of Den Karen and Den Royal Colors has not been registered and named, 'Carmela' is an invalid cultivar name. Cultivar names are supposed to be given when a plant is awarded. An unregistered hybrid (as this one is) would receive only a provisional award until the name was registered. Therefore it is impossible to have an unregistered hybrid with a cultivar name. Feel free to drop the 'Carmela' as its meaningless. So, as it stands, unregistered, the correct name for your orchid is: Dendrobium (Karen x Royal Color). ------------ Regarding cultural advice on how to care for them. It sounds like you have done the correct thing by cleaning up the dead roots and repotting. Get a culture sheet from this forum or at www.aos.org and start following it if you're not already. This should help. Cheers

| If Maine is in US (highschool geography My advice would be to not fertilise now as we're in autumn, as it can force the plant to grow now, and suffer later in spring. I know it sounds silly, but as long as it has roots and leaves, giving it a rest is the best option. |

| And with the correct parent names in place your tag would appear to make perfect sense. Den. Frandy's Fantasy is Den. Kasem White x Den Royal Colors. It was registered in April of this year by Carmela. |

SO, with the updated registration information, we're looking at Den. Frandy's Fantasy 'Carmela'. Also, did you say that other plant was supposed to be a Cattleya? Looks like an Oncidium-alliance plant, to me. -Cj Last edited by Orchidflowerchild; 10-25-2007 at 04:45 PM. |
