keeping orchid records

I am wondering if -- and how -- folks keep records on their orchid collections!? Almost as soon as I bought my first orchid, I started an Excel spread sheet (!!). Each plant gets a number on the spread sheet which I label on the plant itself, and I list ID information and who I got the plant from and basic info. I update this with dates of repotting and dates of new spikes and blooms. (I know, very academic!)

But I could use more information on there, like potting medium and what kind of exposure on my window sills... perhaps this is just getting way out of hand (with about 75 active plants now).

So I'd really appreciate hearing from others if you try to keep records of plants, which live and which die and which rebloom, etc., and where you draw the line on systematizing the world! THANKS ever so much.

Like you I have an excel sheet not only for my orchids but my other plants as well. I keep up with thing like when I transplanted, when I started growing, when I bought them.....etc. I do a lot of rose propagating of roses and other plants as well.

Joan: Awhile back, there were similar questions on another thread. I know that Cynthia uses some codes on her spread sheets to indicate certain data and Mike (mayres) has a data program he uses and can help you with. Personally, I just use the Excel and add some columns with codes to describe my potting media, etc.

I am in the process of making a data sheet in excel. I have the name of the orchid in the first colulmn, a thumbnail photo in the 2nd and so on. The beauty of excel is, that if you need more columns, you just put them where you want them.
