New to Cymbidium Orchids

Hello
I have a dear friend Ruby who took her adventurous self and hiked up to the volcano today ( in St Kitts - Mt Liamuiga-3792 feet) and knowing how much I love orchids, brought me back what looks like a clump of cymbidium orchids. It has lots of bulbs, some are green and some are brown but the leaves are all healthy looking. The roots are attached to some dirt-like medium and pieces of soft tree bark. The roots don't look like ordinary orchid roots, they look more long and skinny like tree roots ( I did not get to ask her where it was taken from ). I need to know what to put them in or on to get them growing again and soon. Please can anyone help me as soon as possible. I am on my way home with them now and will appreciate any help before the night is through as I plan on repotting them in the morning.
Thanks

I'm not aware of any Cymbidiums that are native to the Caribbean, but many orchids look alike when the plants are not in bloom. Can you post a picture of the clump?

Also, is it legal to collect orchids form the wild where you are?

I was going to ask that very same question. But even if it is illegal, your friend would not have known that, would she? I would love to see some photos.

Very cool - hiking up a volcano. I'll have to put that adventure on my list.

I would love to see what she brought home to you. Cyms or not I'm very curious. It sounds like they are at least terrestrial; I would pot them in your regular orchid mix.

Pictures Please!!

PhalPal,

There is an extinct volcano not too far from us, or at least close enough for a day trip. It is located in Amboy. This small town was what the town in the Pixar movie "Cars" was based on. It used to be a town of over 800 until new highways were put in that bypassed Amboy. It now has a population of 5. They are rebuilding the town to try to attract tourists again.

The volcano is an old basalt cone, seen here.

Just thought I would share.

Jay
