nope.. my vandas are in traditional vanda baskets hanging on my wire fence. I water them about 2 to 3 times a day until water drips from the tip of thei roots. and weekly dose of Schultz orchid food. My area is very hot and humid.. so vanda kinds do well.

Did you put them in soil? Vanda Miss Joaquim is my national flower.
In order for her to flower, she need to reach about 7 feet in height. Only then she will
flower. she will flower with any fertilizer. Here my grandfather secret: Dilute urine in 20parts in one.
1 part urine: 20 parts water. He has the biggest bloom in all of singapore.
It is the earliest of all the vanda.
Make sure you have full sunlight for the orchids.
here some picture.

dont use coconut fibre. It encourage fungus and root rot. Yes your climate
is quite similar to mine.
Grow it in soil. Allow it to grow about 2metres or so.
You just need to bury the roots into soil and allow some roots to stay above the soil. The brown stuff you saw is saw dust, it allow the vanda to grow faster. But
you need healthy roots so dont put anything above the soil(those farmer want the vanda to grow really fast). But i heard you have monsoon
seasons, has it past? I heard about the flood a few months ago.
oh, by the way i think you like this video about singapore

Thank you very much digitalgate. My Miss Vanda Joaquim is growing on coal and brick pieces. Is there any harm if I transplant to soil suddenly.? Yes I saw your video. Good one. I have been Singapore in May. It is a beautiful and clean country. We saw the botanical gardens and orchid gardens.
we really enjoyed our stay in Singapore.

I love the part :" Singapore? is it a surburb?"

no problem, dont water everyday with urine. Vanda Miss Joaquim is a terrestrial orchid. As I said dont bury all the roots let some of the roots to
breath. Tie the
Orchid to a stick for support. It will get really tall as high as 3 m, in the farms i visited.
Did you buy the orchids in a flask? If it is a seedling pls dont move them just yet. Grow them in 50 % shade until it is 30cm high, then move them into
full sun.

Full sun in climates with plenty of humidity in the air, but I think here in Arizona, with 10% humidity or less, and lots of heat, full sun is too much.

Mani is in india. humidity is about 60% almost the same as my area.
sometime i envy low temperature in your area as there is less fungus problem. but then when i think of what i can grow outdoor. I thank God for the weather.
I dump really dump my vanda outdoor, mokara in full sun, vanda in full sun
arundina graminifolia in full sun. Dendrobrum in full sun. That good thing about
tropics, it is cheaper to grow them outdoor. sunlight from 7 to 6, rains every
2to 3 days. humidity range from 60 to 100%. Temperature- just draw a
straight line 25c to 31c
I feel awkward when you guys mention resting period.
My Mokara bloom everyday sometime only 1 to 2 week rest. Dendrobrum bloom year round 6 yo 7 spike on one cane. Arudina have not rest for 6 months now.
I feel frustrated about phalaenopsis, they are so slow. 1 bloom every 6 months. Oh, i have harden my phal. to 50% sunlight cool eh?
tropics growing phalaenopsis is totally different ball game. I grow them
without any media. Any media would just rot the roots. Learnt it the hard way. Much like growing Vanda in a basket with no media.

ohh, i'm slightly dissapointed, my vanda miss joaquim is just 4 ft tall (i read somewhere it was somewhat good height for starting to bloom!), i guess i'll just have to wait some more. You mentioned something about coconut fiber. I have my vanda MJ planted in ground coconut fiber and it's been doing quite well (i've had it for almost two years now), I've been considering changing it to soil, but since it haven't shown any problem, I still don't find any real reason for the change. Do you think it will grow faster or stronger if planted in soil? I'll appreciate it very much if you could give me some guidance. It is one of my favorite flowers and i would definetely love to see it bloom as soon as possible.

The same as you Digitalgate, i have my vanda MJ and my arundina graminifolia out in full sun, as well as my brassavolas nodosas and a couple of catasetums. A couple of months ago i got a mini den, a cross between sriracha and sri siam, and its growing like crazy, it is taking a lot of sun but not the full afternoon sun.

I'm in the tropics too, with humidity from the 80's to 95' around this time of the year. But the drier it gets is to the 40's during the dry season from late dec to april. I got all my plants outside with different levels of light and shade.

thanks for any advice
manuel

my feeling you are growing in a pot . Is that so?We export the vanda
in seedling. Did you started from seedling?
look at the link you get an idea how other ppl grow the orchid
http://www.orchidsasia.com/vanda/grow21.jpg
The vanda need 6 feet in height or higher. No height No flower.
The brown stuff you see they cover the plant with is saw dust. I do not recommend you do that. It increases the chances of fungus infection.
Do you know how Vanda Miss Joaquim was discovered? In the soil or dirt.
Make sure you put lot of fertilizer. Our lowest temperature for 30 years
was 25C or 77F.

Dear digitalgate
Thanks for your information. I bought my Vanda MJ in a tube from the National Orchids Garden Singapore. Its growth is slow. Three leaves has come up. Now it is in full light. I started giving cow urine yesterday by spraying on the roots. When can i shift it to soil. Which soil is best? We have two types of soil - red and black. I got the problem of snails. As suggested by some of our forum friends I used metaldehyde but I still saw some snails on the coal. Vanda MJ flowers in which season in Singapore?
Waiting for your reply
Thanks - Mani

I was afraid you are going to say that. Don't put into soil yet. Don't give any
full fertilizer. Don't put into full sun yet. You have watch the growth.
You only do all that when it has established itself in the medium you are growing in.
you should
1) Grow it in 50% sunlight
2) put them in a pot with charcoal.(don't use coal)
3) Water with fertilizer 1/3 strength every other day.
-meaning Monday , Wednesday, Friday, followed by Sunday , Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, blah blah blah...
wait till it is about 8 cm in height and the root is sticking onto charcoal.
put it on top of red soil, gradually move into full sunlight
- sterilised the red soil with hot water to kill the snail before putting
plant on it(please allow 1 to 2 hour to cool down the soil)
of course use a small pot of soil in the beginning. As the
plant grow, move it into a bigger pot of soil.
-Dont bury the vanda in the soil. Let the root reach for the soil.In another
words put the plant that has stuck itself on charcoal, on the soil.
Now that you have 3 new leaves ,you condition is good for it. Snail is a
great problem for young plant. They love new shoots and new roots
Protect the young plant from it all. You got to watch young seedling
everyday.
I will post pictures of various stages of Vanda Miss Joaquim growth.
My friend just grow from flask 3 months back. He brought the 40 seedling
bottle from Woon Leng. (the same company that produce your seedling)
The flower bloom year round. Singapore has no season. Only 1 season
- hot day sunny day and hot rainy day.

mani, depending on the height of the plant. you feed the plant with dung
once every 6 month. But dung carries their fair share of problem. Pest such
as snails, spider mites, fungus.... So are you willing to add pesticides or snails
or slug killing chemical? Remember every time you add those you cause
stress to the plant, slow them down for a few weeks.
one solution is to add boiling water to the dung to kill anything in it. (I love
to use goat dung.) Let it cool down to room temperature . water the plant
with that. Dont add too much as you are also using urine to water the
plant. Watch the root; are they turning black due to chemical burn.
Remember the rules
fertilizer orchids weekly, weakly . It is far better to fertilize
every 2 or 3 days using 1/3 strength fertilizer than full strength
I end up using chemical fertilizer as my some of my orchids are seedling .
any pictures of the plant?

Digitalgate, Phalaenopsis slow down when they get too much light. They are being stressed, which is not good for them. I would recommend that you reduce the light on your Phals and you may find that they grow faster.

The comment about not using full sun light for low humidity areas was given for the benefit of of others reading these posts.

Dear cynthia, eh....., we are 'talking' about Vanda. Not Phal.
Thank you for the info. I made that mistake this year by Phal. giving too much
light and too much heat. But then, i should show you the harden Phal that my
friend had. Man! i really want a green house like yours that can hold 700 plants.

Newly added from Cynthia: Digitalgate, I am quoting you from one of your posts above,

Digitalgate: 'I feel frustrated about phalaenopsis, they are so slow. 1 bloom every 6 months. Oh, i have harden my phal. to 50% sunlight cool eh?'

This is what I was responding to. Did you not mean what you said? Cynthia, Prescott, AZ
