Help

I have 10 orchids outside. And only 7 inside. Total 17 or more .
So I live in San Diego and the lowest we get is at 45 degrees at night.
Will my orchids survived?
I just dont have enough room to put them all inside.
Or can I cover them with something to protect them when we really get cold.
I only have my 5 Phalaenopsis and Bur Nelly Isler "Swiss Beauty"
and a epiphyllum oxypetalum (which has a bud ready to open tonight) Inside my room.
My Sister is not very happy hehehe.

Thanks for your help and have a happy orchid day.

Dens and cattleyas, zootrophion, vanda stangeana, sobralia ecuadoriana, miltoniopsis roezlili "panama"
They did so good in summer but I have no idea which ones will survived winter

How cold are your highs during the winter? 45 degrees is not going to kill any of your orchids, but if you lots of days in a row in the low 60's or cooler my guess is that they are going to stall and not grow much (or at all)? I don't have your growing conditions so I'm kind of guessing - hopefully Jerry Meola or someone else that grows in the southern climate will soon follow...........

I have all my catts and dens outside. Our winter temperature ranges 4C (35F) to 18C (64F) in winter. We rarely have frost.

The other issue is rain. We have lots of heavy rain in winter. I didn't think they could handle all that cold rain during their rest period, so I have them sheltered under the garden pagoda.

Now that Spring is here, they are all in active growth, sending out new leaves and roots!

I hope that helps.

pssst...I am in the process of buying a used shade house for them! Yah!

The averages for San Diego are 45 degrees lowest to 64 degrees highest in winter.
And its sunny so that helps as well to bring some heat.
We usually get little rain.
Its a high dessert near the ocean.

We also rarely get frost.
I dont have to worry much about rain since they are sheltered by a tree and protected from the rain as well.

In early spring is when we get the most of our rain.
Then in summer it heats up.

I was thinking of buying a shade house, but I am thinking of buying a small green house since we have tons of space outside.

Hi Sea Sun,

I live in South Florida. I leave all of my orchids (about 30, not a huge amount) outside unless they're blooming then I bring them inside.

We get as low as 45 sometimes, occasionally the weatherman predicts frost. It has not happened in the last 3 years. 64 as a high is probably our January weather but even in January we can get up to +75F. So I'm not quite as cool as you but my orchids do fine outside all year.

The weather is similar to yours.
So I guess I wont have a problem then.
Know I feel better.

NancyG, what kind of protection do you have for your orchids. Could you post a pic so I could see?

Chefatplay,

I don't have any protection for the orchids because it is so rare that it gets that cold. Our backyard is bordered by a ficus hedge so that helps. I think last year I brought the hanging orchids and the potted ones in for just one night when they were predicting a possible frost. It didn't get close so all the mounted orchids were fine.

NancyG, thanks for the information. I am getting so in to all of this, I want to be able to put my babies in the warm humidity they love so they will give me new growth and babies in the future. I need to find a way to keep them from blowing over when the wind blows. What do you do?

I am a commercial nursery in SW Florida and my temperatures will go to as low as 28. I still never bring any indoors or heat the area (it would not be possible anyway).

I can get leaf damage from severe cold but seldom lose a plant to it. Now summer heat and high humidity together can kill a lot of plants. I am looking forward to the temperature drop this month to stop working so hard to fight the heat.

Chefatplay,

I have about 10 plants in containers that are placed in a plant stand with about a 5" lip all the way around. Occasionally when it is really windy I can use twist ties to tie the tall ones to the stand so they don't tip over. The rest are hanging in the trees in the backyard or mounted to the palm trees. They do fine. Like I said previously the backyard is inclosed with a fence and ficus hedge and that cuts down on the wind.

The lady I was buying orchids from said that most orchids can handle temps. around 10C (50F) as long as they are against a wall ( or something similar) and are kept huddled together.

I , however, do not have any personal experience with lower temperatures since I move them into a portable 'heated GH' if the temp. drops to below 12C(55F).

I hope this info helps a little.

It would be good idea to keep an eye on the orchids for signs of stress. Check them each morning ; just to be safe

Well you could live in Colorado and live both worlds! Saturday I went to a football game in a t-shirt... got sunburn on my forehead... and sweltered in the 80F temps. Woke up on Sunday and it was snowing!!! We had 5 inches of snow and the high temp was 34F. Today, Tuesday, our hi is supposed to be 60F.

My daughter took these pics on her way back to college. They couldn't return on Sunday as the Pass was closed so she got to stay an extra day.
