Sievekingia culture

I bought a bareroot Sievekingia suavis from the San Francisco OrchidFest this past weekend and is unsure of its culture. The grower/seller told me to put in a basket of sphag moss, give it moderate to bright diffused light, and keep moist. He said its culture is similar to a Stanhopea. However, I did a little Googling and read that the culture is more similar to Gongora, which requires lower light conditions.

Can anyone give me culture tips on the Sievekingia?

TIA

Thanks, Fred. Now, I just hope the vanda basket I'll be putting my Siev in is good for the next couple years.

I grow my Gongoras and my Stanhopias together. The light is probably in between what they need, but my Stanhopias are not blooming, so maybe I will move them into higher light, when I have more room as many of the Dens go into the cold frame. I have had my Sievekingia suavis with my Stanhopias for a season, and with my Phals for a season, and I have not had it really thrive either way. I may try a piece in much more light, since I have divided it. But there appears to be a tendency to lose new growths. Good luck on yours.

Cynthia,

Thanks for sharing your experience with your Siev. suavis. Let's keep one another updated on how ours are doing. For now, I'll hang mine in my girls' bathroom where it can have medium indirect light.

OK, just checked my records, and I am mixing up the Sievekingia with my Koellensteinia. Since neither has bloomed yet, they are only very foreign names to me. The Sievekingia is growing with the Stanhopias and Gongoras. It was a seedling from EOoM 2 years ago, so should bloom soon, as Mike of EOoM always sends/sells very advanced seedlings. I will leave all the plants where they are except the Stanhopias when I move the Stans to higher light. If the Sievekingia doesn't bloom this spring, I'll move it in with the Phals. Looks like Jay Pfal considers it very low light. http://www.orchidspecies.com/sievsuavis.htm
