Vase Culture

i've mentioned this once before but never really got any response. I've moved my two Vanda's to vases as summer is now over and growing them in the greenhouse is impossible.

Its quite a simple idea, used quite widely by growers who cant get the heat/light/humidity combo that Vanda's need. It can be used with most monopedial orchids like Ascocenda and Aranda.

The photos should make it all clear. Water is poured in, left to soak, then poured out. Fertiliser can be added as and when with the waterings. Leaving some water behind lets it evaporate to keep the humidity up. This means the vase can be kept in a warm bright spot on a window sill.

Heavy vases are safest as they dont topple very easily. Abit of wire around the basket and over the lip of the vase takes the strain of weight off the plant.

i guess the vase would keep humidity at the roots at peak levels (close to 100%?). good idea for winter!

It does make sure they stay moist I Think I may stick with it for all seasons, the vases can go in the greenhouse during the summer.

Its also alot tidier to have around, no dripping plants lol.

Tom, when I recently visited the grower, they were adopting this method for thier vandas, the only difference in the vases narrowed near the top which allowed the basket to sit their comfortably without droppping into the vase.

hope this makes sense.

I've seen that style too, they look very cool.

I couldnt really use that style as my Vanda's roots stick outwards hehe, I just popped down to Ikea with some radius measurements and got 2 vases for £14

Hey Tom,
I am growing my first vanda in a vase too!
It has been 10 days. I think everything is OK, there might even be a little bit of root growth (the root tips are a bit green).
How is your vanda coming along?
I will try to post pics later.
Miki

Tom, I don't have any vandas but I have seen them for sale on verious sites in vases, it looks like a good idea and not so much problem with rot.

Its certainly made my life easier. The roots stay green for much longer, and now there getting regular temps they should be happier.

Wonder what else I can vase

I like the idea, I haven't tied Vanda's yet becaus eof the humidity requirements, I think I may have to give it a go, the vase idea would really work for me!
