Encyclia tampensis

Just bought seedling, wondered If anyone else here grows them? Native to Florida I think someone may

There meant to flower quite small so I should have some nice scent in a few years.

Tom,
I personally don't have one but I've seen them a few times. Very pretty
blooms that are quite scented. I found a link for its culture. Just click
on 'Encyclia tampensis' when you get there.

Encyclia tampensis is not native to Florida. I believe it comes form Central America (I'll have to check my accuracy on that point). I have grown it quite successfully in the exact same conditions as Cattleyas. if you have a seedling you might want to keep it a little more humid or a little moister than if it were an adult. It's DELIGHTFULLY fragrant! i love it.

I did a little reading on this plant... it sounds like a good addition to a collection. And I think it qualifies for my tree mounting project.

i thought so tobi gave me a site with its general info.

Its my seedling tester plant. I wasnt sure if i was ready to buy a flask, so i bought a year out of flask seedling. If i can keep it alive I'll think about a flask. Flowers are a long way off in either case.

Tom. When do you start your first term at Uni? Will you have enough time to study and care for you tampensis plus the rest of the plants? If you will be attending the local U then presumably you will be able to get home frequently. Good luck with the orchds and the course.

Bill

I have another year in college like schooling to get through first, gonna be a dreary year but i just gotta make sure i get the grades

Plant biology or biology genetics is what I'm aiming for. My first choice is aberwystyth, A few hours on the train from home. Depending on accomedation, some of my plants will be coming with me My parents are very green so they will be looking after the rest.

Hopefully I'll come out with a job that pays to work with plants

Hi Tom. I recently purchased an Encyclia tampensis which I immediately mounted on cork bark. No blooms as yet, but it's growing lots of nice new roots.

My original aim at Uni was to be a botanist/field taxonomist. Eventually I realized that field taxonomy doesn't pay for beans... Of course, I'm still interested in plant biology, but I eventually changed my major to clinical psychology. My one bit of advice, as a senior to an incoming freshman: don't be afraid to be a general studies major for a while and give yourself the opportunity to explore other options. You may find something else that really catches your interest. Personally, I should've changed majors at least three semesters before I did. Now, I'm looking at two years as a senior... But que sere. Shoot for your dreams, but allow room for the dreams to change, if need be.

Thankyou for the advice Orchidflowerchild I was thinking about that, The course may be real fun, but if i cant get a good job at the end of it, im kinda screwed.

Biology genetics would give me a wider scope with it being plants and animals. Genetics could give me a good platform for working in plant breeding. I would say I'm more interested in the micrology of plants rather than ecology. I prefer a warm lab to a cold hill side anyday

That is a great mount vivienne I will probably keep mine in a pot, as with all the talk of Uni next year makes me think of what I am going to do with all my plants!

Newsflash!: During a conversation with my mother and girlfriend, my room is being cleared, my younger sis is having it, and anything left behind will be got rid of for me :| So next september i will be at the train station with a small bag of clothes and a mobile greenhouse

I can relate Tom. My daughter just left for college and before she was even gone my youngest son (14) had half is belongings in her room. He's quite sick of 'rooming' with his older brother (15). LOL

Good luck with Uni!! We want pics of your dorm room, complete with greenhouse, when you get there.

Hmmm, I'm not sure what to think tom. They look to be in pots that are way to big and where are the pseudobulbs? Burried? I dont' think you got robbed unless you paid something like 20 pounds. Seedlings are usually cheap and small.

I have to agree with kevin tom the pots are to big for the size of the plants
I would say 2inch pot would be the best at this time.
