First off, Welcome to the forum. A lot of people here with a lot of great advise. As far as hydro, check out this link and do searches for "semi-hydro" and "worm tea". Hope this helps.

Jay

Try this site as well:

http://www.growinhydro.com/4436.html

and this:

http://www.firstrays.com/

both are hydroponic sites for orchids. I have recently converted a few onciciums, 2 catts, a phal, and a paph to hydro. All seem to be doing very well. I have actually seen some more growth from two of the oncidiums since they have been moved over. I used worm tea instead of water for the hydro.

You can make it yourself, I buy it from Our Vital Earth. The reason I buy it there is that it is super concentrated and they feed the worms minerals so that there are trace elements in the liquid.

There are some people that have bought worm castings (manure) and put it in a sock and steep it in water to make worm tea. If you do a worm tea search there are tons of pages about it.

I have only been using it for a week, and I am impressed already. Living in the desert, it is very hard to get them enough water and humidity. The worm tea is supposed to help them retain up to 30% more water. My phal was getting droopy leaves before I got the tea. Now they are plumping back up. They are not "standing" up like new leaves, but the are firm and shiny again. It is a little expensive to have it shipped, but it dilutes 50-1 (1/3 cup to a gal) and the results are nice.

Hope this helps some more.

Jay

I have read on firstrays.com that it has been done. They used fine grade Primeagra LECA and made community pots. I have not attempted flasks yet, but look forward to possibly trying in the springs.
