Orchid Identification

Hello

I bought this orchid at an exhibition in Mumbai, India and I am not able
to identify it and hence I dont have any idea about its cultural requirement. Can anybody help me out which orchid is this.

Thanks,

Mani

I really have no idea, could be a Catt? Bumping you up maybe one of the experts will see this.

I am probably the last person who should attempt to identify an orchid. But since I have more than a dozen of Cattleyas and BLCs, I can attempt a guess

I think it is a Cattleya too.

What is in the pot as growing medium? Thanks.

Hi Man, I have to agree with Brook that what you have is a Catt. One of their points of ID is the large psbulb and from your pic. the bulbs are quite large. Of course some other orchids have large bulbs, but until proved otherwise it is a Catt.

Looks like a Cattleya-type to me.

You can download a free culture sheet at www.aos.org click on culture sheets.

It looks like it is potted in mud. It would be best to get it out of that as soon as possible. Cattleya-types do well in bark chips or even stones.

I think that is actually sphag gone really bad, looks like it could definitely use a repot.

Dear Pikevi and all others

thanks for your reply. The growing medium is spagnum moss and coal pieces. If it is catt , I will replace the moss with brick pieces.

Mani

I am not an expert. But I think you should keep/replace (with fresh) moss. You could add little pieces of bricks but not at the expense of the moss. Is the coal mined?

I think fossil coal has some 'tar' and may not be suitable for orchids. I am sure others will shed some light on it soon.

I am also sure they will agree on keeping the moss.

Good luck.
