Wow, there really are some stunning displays here

For me, I live in a tiny flat which we try to keep minimal so I don't have many options of where to put everything, here are some pics of how my place looks at the mo, but I move my plants all the time depending on time of year, heating and the weather as most of my wondows get ALOT of sun (this gives me alot of probs in the summer with few safe places ).

Pictured is how I have things generally, my lounge where I put most flowering plants, my bedroom is the sick room for struggling plants (currently 3 although 1 is nearly recovered), my kitchen is for seedlings and new plants, my bathroom is for spare plants...I have other odd plants around the place but not many

It's like going to a wedding and needing the right dress! I'm a sucker for cool containers as well as the orchids! Nice set up!

Mehitabel, thank you for the nice compliment
Imartiny, you said it alot of work. I have to water twice as much now as I did. I watered every seven days when they were outside now it's every three days. But no bugs, no spiders I hateeeee spiders. You can run me around the block and back over one little bitty spider. LOL It gets real hot in there too. It took me six hours the other day but I checked all of them very good.
Thanks Rachel, it feels good for me to go into the room every morning and drink my coffee I have a nice cushion chair in there LOL
Fred, your so funny LOL. I won't tell her LOL I do have a nice bed not far away and my little orchids are calling LOL
cym1972 thank you for the compliment I love your cyms too
koski, thank you for the compliment LOL
thanks everyone

Hubby keeps threatening to get a green house because he remembers last winter when we hauled them in, then out, then in, then out..... Cold snaps are brief down here, but can be brutal. I've learned not to take them lightly, but stuff does stay out when it is iffy. Too much work. And this year I have many more orchids. Plus all my other plants.

You may have a visit from DEA just wondering why your electric bill jumped suddenly.

In door watering is a mystery to me. I normally run gallons of water through my pots when I water. Where does the water go when you water? Does your floor have a drain. Or do you take each plant to where it's watered?

Great setup, hope your plants thrive through the winter.

Debra, it looks great. I didn't think it got that cold where you are. I wonder if I could convince my hubby to give up his office and turn it into a green room.

I think I see berber carpet under those plant stands. I would have the room destroyed in no time...I'm NOT a tidy waterer. What few plants I have in the house on windowsills, I end up with more water on the sills than the plants!

That said, it looks fantastic, OL55! I'm especially envious of your Phals...they all look so plump and gorgeous! Lovely!

WOW. Very impressive. And what a collection of healthy plants you have!!!

Everytime I hear the words "Grow room" I get dizzy with desire. This falls under "keep dreaming" and "long term goals" for me.

Like others, I want to know how you water. I bring each plant to the faucet. What a bunch of work.

I agree, I'd have water all over the place. I did notice alot have the plastic saucers under them, but how do you water all those orchids?

That's a really nice room. You will have a nice place to store your orchids this winter. I need to work on doing something about bringing mine in somewhere when it gets too cold.

Hey DT!! I need to build something outside for the enormous amount of Catts I have out there right now....should have built something FIRST and then bought new orchids but we all know how that goes! I have admired your shade house structures and think something similiar would work well for me. Once we have something in use we seem to get little brain storms of 'Why didn't I think of that before??" It's why our growing areas will never be finished!
If you were to build them today, what would you do differently if anything??
BTW - I just spent hours going through this thread page by page and it is amazing how all of us have evolved and grown in this hobby. It really was interesting and I got lots of great ideas to boot.

This is where my chids live, about four feet from my favorite spot on the couch where my computer is. I stare at them all day long.
My dream is to build a house with a big glass room, like on the Addam's Family movie, with a little bistro table and wifi, so I can stare at my beauties, enjoy my coffee and surf the net for more.

This is one of the major growing spaces for the orchids in the bedroom I've been using since I started. What you don't see is the reading lamp on the beside table about a foot away and the open window on the other side of the bedroom. It's a NE window in a residental area in SE omaha, Nebraska. I run a ceiling fan at night. The temps in the house at this point don't go above 75F during the day at the most and it doesn't go below 65F at night. My room generally stays cooler in the winter and hotter in the summer. I sleep with the ceiling fan on at night.

Everything will change when I move into the new apartment tomorrow.

To explain this picture a bit.. The black containers to the left are the carpet python cages. The black container on bottom normally holds my big black blood python (she is out on breeder loan) and all of them are supported on a long dresser.

The small purple cat is next to the reading light on the bedside table, along with the larger phal in growing mode, and the sundrew plant is directly under the light.

Two of the other cats are on a plastic clothes hamper (which is on the other side of the long dresser) directly across from the outer window and the big Blc. and the Zygo (highest light requirments) are right next to the window on the tall dresser.

Oh, I also took this picture before I added the masdie to the mix.

So I have finally put together the start of a nice indoor growing area for my orchids to spend the winter. Some of my Catts were getting too hot in my south facing window so I had to come up with a different solution. I installed a T5HO Tek Light on one of the shelves of my stand in the SE sliding glass door window. I put most my BS Catts in the middle and seedlings and spiking Phals on the outside of the shelf. The rest of my Catts are in the screened side of my S facing window and are thriving well so I left them there for now. On the rest of the shelves are all Phals (except 2 NoID Dens). It has been 2 weeks since I rearranged them and added the light. I think it is helping, the plants stay warm (not too hot and not too cool) and I have numerous new growths starting on a lot of my Catts!! Humidity here usually stays between 35 and 60, but they don't seem to mind the lower humidity sometimes. I think they have adapted to it for the most part. So it is not much but it is a start....

I would post som pics but its not working. I grow my orchid right next to my lizard cage. He needs a high power a full spectrum light and theres enough light comig fom that to grow all three of my orchids

This is a sample of my current growing space, but everything is being moved around and reorganized, especially since I think I just tripled the number of orchids I own.

This is area 1, in front of the balcony sliding glass doors in the living room. My second bedroom I think will become a warmer room/light room for reptiles, inverts and orchids. Right now the inverts and the reptiles live in that room. The orchids are slowly moving in and are doing their best to take over.

As you can see from the boxes, I'm in the middle of moving in, in fact I still have to get stuff out of the house where I was living, and then everything will be here or in storage at least. I think I took this in the middle of watering, so some of the 'chids are not in this photo.

I finally have access to my sunroom!

As some of you know, I recently moved into a ranch home to accommodate my wheelchair. We have a nice sunroom, but it is down a step and was being used (and still is, a bit) for storage until other parts of the house were finished.

Just a week or so ago, DH put in the temporary ramp and my new light stand for my 'chids! And last week, he asked if I would like a large folding table in there, too. I told him it seemed he wanted me to get more orchids (he said not, but you be the judge!).

Anyway, here are some shots from inside the sunroom, looking out the side door to where we will build a rack for shady plants next summer, the patio, and the part of the patio that DH has proposed for a future greenhouse! The last photo is where my tomato plants were last summer, but we will be relocating them to elsewhere in the yard, where they'll get more sun.

Thanks, Bernie!

Our work has been almost exclusively on the inside, but we're nearing the end of the major stuff, so we hope to do a lot more on the outside next summer. One project is to extend the patio so that I have more areas I can go, put tomatoes where they belong and free up the patio. I got stuck in wet grass more than once last summer, and the tomatoes grew so huge I could only just get by them!

I haven't caught up with this thread for quite some time, interesting happenings.

Orchidlover, if I did that it would be D.I.V.O.R.C.E. the new GH is tolerated, but inside, .......no, no no. I am allowed a couple of flowerers, but that is it.

Katherine, I see plenty of potential down the side of the house. Some framework, some alcinite clear sheeting to seal it from the weather, shadecloth for summer, drip feeds, and some benches, plus shelving on the house wall..............

I do digress.

Thanks, Brooke! It still has to be painted and we're going to remove the carpet and put flooring down (the stack of boxes in the corner).

The greenhouse idea came from my husband! It's not really an ideal location (the part by the garage won't get much afternoon sun). He's really thinking more like a solarium, that is a glass room where he can have coffee and read the paper. He said I couldn't take it over with plants. (Hehe. Watch me.) It really is not a near term project anyway...we've got our youngest to get through college starting in 2011! And in fact, I have so enjoyed that part of the patio this past summer, I'm not entirely sure about his idea.

My small collection....

All phals and one den phal.

They are on a table between a big south facing window and a smaller west facing window, they get first morning bight sun and shaded sun from both windows through out the day, We are in Canada though and our sun is not very bright (especially this time of year)

I had them right in the South facing window but I was getting some burn on some of the phals so I thought this would be better???

They are right next to a warm mist humidifier, it can get VERY dry here without one, but I think this keeps things at around 40 to 50%.

I am still very new to orchids and these are all supermarket type orchids, I am going to give it until spring to see how well these ones are doing before I invest in some different types of plants.

I have a room with a large North facing window, that I'm considering turning into my plant room... would the North facing window be alright during the winter months?

It might be okay for paphs, phals and other low light plants, but anything else you'd have to add lights too. I'm not sure, but you might have to add lights to it anyway.

I bought a grow light either way, but I'm hoping to have "my space" even before we buy a house

Here it what I have for growing space. As you can see it it is getting full and crowded.

My Growing Space #2-sa400588.jpg

My Growing Space #2-sa400589.jpg

This is the area I would like to expand. I really like Breezy79's setup with the tiered shelving and grow light. But the problem is the width. So what I am thinking about doing is getting another plant stand and putting it where my cym cross is sitting and just set that chid in the goldfish bowl sitting on the floor. Maybe try to attach a grow light underneath the plant stand. And yes girls, those are push pins holding back the curtains

Your setup looks really nice. I think you have plenty of space for a shelving unit....mine is only 3 feet wide. And they make them smaller and larger. I really would like to get a 4 ft. one for in front of my living room window (then I could get so many more 'chids!), but my boyfriend would probably put me in the loony bin. I have a friend that already makes fun of me and says I'm going to turn into a plant person like in the Sims games when they fertilize their plants too much (anybody know what I'm talking about?). Quite an amusing thought though.

Love the push pins! My curtains are held together by bobby pins! LOL.

My Growing Space #2

Good afternoon!
I am going to try and upload the photos of this newbie's growing space. Mayres, thank you for your advice regarding the photo upload. I am using t5's. The original bank of six to one shelf was too much for the height, so I cut down on that shelf to four and used the other 2 on the shelf below. Most of my phals are in spike and my one of my dendrobium actually decided to rebloom, my first. The yellow phal and the onc. tsiku marguerite are new purchases, so I can't claim them!
Without all of the help on this board, I would not be enjoying what I have, thank you all.

About 1-2 months ago I updated my growing space - added shelves and a light. It's amazing how much extra room placing shelves here gave me to grow... and even more amazing how I've managed to fill up all that extra space in a heartbeat.

The whole unit sits on a wooden table in front of a porch-covered south window. I have two fans on 24 hrs a day; the light itself (just a compact florescent) is on a timer. The temperature ranges from about 60 at night to 80 in the day; humidity averages about 60% but has occasionally dropped to 40%. (In the summer time, it regularly hits 95-100%.) These orchids were grown outdoors in the summer, and I attribute most of my spiking success to that.

This is in my office; when I work from home I park my laptop right next to this display and talk to them as I check off tasks. Best work desk ever!

Can't wait until I have a green house someday. For now tho, relative newb that I am, this is great.

I'm always amazed at the indoor growing. I take growing outside for granted I think. I don't think I'd succeed with indoors.

Wow! This thread has made me so envious of some of the gowing spaces that everyone has! I want to live somewhere hot where I go grow outside, but until then I have my orchids on a eastly facin window and they seem to be doing very well. I am quite taken with all the shelfing arrangements on here though..... Can see me getting some very soon, which would mean that I would have to buy more orchids to fill the shelfs!

I'm still adjusting mine quite a bit as I settle in. I noticed when I went to water one of my paphs that I burned one of its leaves in the november sun with the patio door sunshine. I may make my second bedroom a lower light area, just so I don't fry all my low light chids this summer. I'm confident that I could grow vandas with the lighting in here. It's a whopping 52F by the windowsill in the bedroom ...so the masdevillas are loving it in here. I had to back the croton mammy away from the light becuase it was getting to cold and dropping leaves.

I feel the same way Maiseymoo I can't imagine the number of orchids I'd have if I could grow them outdoors. Smile, we do pretty good with our shelving and lights though.

Thank you! I have limited space also. I got the stand at Loew's garden shop and if I remember correctly, it was about $40, four shelves that I cut back to two. The lamps were Home Depot and I think about $24 a fixture of 2 bulbs. I didn't get grow lights, only the t5's. Used s hooks to hold up the fixtures.

Glad you guys liked the setup. I was inspired by this thread - wanted to have something to share.

Olive Cook, like what you've done!

I really enjoy seeing other's grow spaces and love the sentiment behind this thread. It's great to be able to visit each other's orchids virtually! And some of the spaces on here make me drool... some day.

My new addition....

Well, this is the latest i've done for my growing space..... I added a second lattice.... I've pretty much got rid of most of my potted plants... and see!!!! nothing on the floor!!!

Having nothing on the floor was one of my goals.... the other was to have a more cohesive collection and I'm definetely more into my stanhopeas....which all are mounted...... I do have other... who wouldn't!!!

The dry season in the tropics is almost here so I have my "no water" plants on the other side of the balcony. (you can see them with their dry leaves)

Zuri, I have that very same shelf, and never thought to put a longer light on top like you did! What a great idea! (...on my way back to Lowes/HD!)

That is so lovely. I wonder if I can add a smaller unit like yours on top of mine, looks to be like the same company. Probably would become top heavy though, sigh. Just think, skyscraper orchids! Where did you find your shelves?

I love how you have incorporated a theme with your orchids, so pretty. My decorating talent is just about zilch...my shabby chic will soon be antiques!

I am quite taken with all the shelfing arrangements on here though..... Can see me getting some very soon, which would mean that I would have to buy more orchids to fill the shelfs!
Maiseymoo, don't you think our choosing orchids to present their lovely flowers in our cold winter months brings a bit of the tropics to us? Think that's why I love them so.

Red face My Growing Space #2

Just figured I'd share some pics of one of my growing area's as well as some of the spikes that have been developing. This room is home to several varieties of plants including but not limited to: Rue, Cyms, Dens, odontocidium, catt, paph, purple heart, purple passion, purple moon, spider plants, rosemary, ivy.. and the list goes on and on...

I keek my phals in a different room for southern exposure.

Ahhhhh....plants, plants, and more plants...everywhere you look...plants!! Looks great!! It's the theme of my own place...plants.

Sooner or later I will post pics of my recently renovated grow space and you'll see what I'm talking about. My husband lovingly refers to it as our conservatory.

Def post some pics! I really enjoy viewing others grow spaces, provides inspiration! This room is in the process of being re-arranged as well, (winter projects) everytime I think I'm running out of room I find a spot for just "one more plant"

Very nice, I love the cym, does it have a name? And I'd love to see it when the buds open.
